First trip with the camera (hopefully)

I've never really traveled. I'm potentially headed to Philly for a business conference, and I thought it would be a perfect opportunity to cross a trip to NYC off of my bucket list. I have a decent idea of what I want to see, but not what I want to photograph. I know I'm visiting Adorama.

I'm flying to Philly, taking the train to NYC and back. I'll either pack a main suitcase and leave it in Philly or take a couple smaller ones with me to NYC. My questions are thus - which lenses should I take, and should I stick with the 202AW bag or is this too big and prone to snatching? I'm going native - subway and shoes, so lighter is better.

Whatever you bring, just make sure you've got room for all the stuff you're going to buy at Adorama. :)

I live in suburban Philly. You might want to make time to go to the Independence Hall area if your schedule permits. (It is more fun in the summer though.)

Also, both B&H and Adorama will be closed for the Passover Holiday from Monday March 25, 2013 at 12:45pm and will reopen on Wednesday April 3 at 9:00 am. When are you going?

I'd grab that Tokina and your 35 prime. NYC is real fun to shoot les there's cold and bitter winds.

Not sure what or if anything I'll buy at Adorama. More of 'I'm here, let's see what you got' kinda trip.

I'd have to practice outdoors with the Tokina, I've not been happy with the quality digitally. But the consensus is to leave the kit lens at home?

What about the bag? It's plenty comfortable, but I wonder if it will be too much or a security risk.

Early May. The plan was to hit up downtown Philly in the afternoons while the conference was going on. Probably will come back early enough the day before to take a tour of the Hall.

Make sure you get tickets for the Hall. . . with the sequester the hours have been reduced too.

Looks like I'm headed to San Francisco instead. It was my first choice, and it's worked out. Everything is squared away except my first night's stay, so no backing out.

Basically, same questions. Lots of walking, cable cars. Since I won't be travelling between cities I won't have to worry too much about what I take.

Well, unless you plan buying more lenses for your trip, you can probably get away with bringing both the 35mm and kit lens with you. I live in NY and usually pick carry just the 35mm on my DSLR. On my FM film camera, the 50mm is all I need. In my opinion, having to walk around to get the shot is a more engaging experience than zooming in and out to frame the shot. By using a single focal length, you're forced to think. It's good practice. The 35mm is the better glass. I try not to walk around with a camera bag at all. Not because of a security thing...it get's annoying after a while carrying all that gear and you miss interesting stuff along the way if you're constantly worrying. Anything else you could possibly need should fit in your pocket for a day's worth of photography (Lenspen, spare card & spare battery). Leave the camera bag in your hotel safe. Lens choice has a lot to do with what your subject is. You're the better person to answer that. You wouldn't bring a wide angle lens if you were doing mostly macro work for example.

If that Tokina is manual focus, leave it at home.
