First impressions of the Pup's Z50ii

This is a quick report on my daughter's camera. I got it for her earlier this year, but she hasn't really used it that much due to the weather. We sat down this morning and looked at a bunch of shots she has taken since the weather has cooled down.

I must admit that I am impressed with the resolution. I don't know if it's the lack of a low pass filter, or what, but they seem very sharp at 100% magnification. Of course, this is the same sensor the D500 uses, and that has a great reputation for a wildlife camera. She's slowly getting used to the new menus and features, but tech isn't her strong suit.

If I hadn't picked up a Z8 earlier this year, I might have had to think hard about a Z50ii for myself. I would like to take her camera out with my long tele and see how the AF compares to the Z8. It has all the same object detection and tracking features, not sure how other aspects of the camera affect the ability of the AF to lock and track. There are a ton of features on this camera that previously where only available on the Z8 and Z9. Things like 3D tracking, pre-release capture, high JPG fps rates etc.

The biggest down side is that she is not getting great battery life. I haven't had her go through the menus to optimize battery life over shooting preferences. I know I made a change or two on my 8, that I had to switch back because I was running out of battery too quickly. Of course, a quick battery change takes care fo the issue. Just make sure to have a fully charged spare with you.

The bottom line is that I believe that this is a great camera for the money.

Those batteries are small, carry spares for sure when they are up good they hold up nice. Keep the delay to sleep fairly short and tell her to get used to tapping the shutter button as she brings the camera up for a shot, this is what has worked for me on Z50.

I have heard only great reports and welcome your (and the pup's) feedback. I will likely grab one in the near future (maybe a winter time trade the stuff I'm not using and get one).

Thanks for the report

I doubt she will use many of the features the Expeed 7 gives, but so far, she believes this was a decent upgrade from her D5600. I was willing to get her whatever she wanted up to a Z8, but she wanted small, light and easier to use. On a positive note, she has gotten fairly comfortable with using manual with auto ISO. She has a great artistic eye, and thinks of things that don't cross my mind. If she gets a little more comfortable with the technical end, I think she will make a first class photographer. It sort of runs in the family. My dad, me and now her. I'm trying to get her to join the forum. I would love to see her post some of her images here. I think the community here would be a good thing for her.

She is lucky to have your support, she should join the forum. I remember you posting her doing contest. I like to think we are pretty laid-back and supportive of each other

She sounds like my niece, she has a natural eye for composition as well. She takes awesome photos with her D5600. Not real technical though 🙂
