First Impressions D7100

I would choose body only Sam. I was working on a part time gig in our local store and I was demonstrating CLS and using the other flash (on camera) as a slave. I didn't buy any since I have no use for another body (yet). Lol!

Ok, back home after a round trip of 820 miles for a Cheesesteak! 410 miles was in the rain, bad enough but worse when on a motorcycle!!

Anyway, back to on topic... I sat down with the camera today and just started taking some pictures... I did pretty good remembering the controls. There were a couple that I had to look up... and I still forget whether to use the command wheel or sub command wheel.. That will take a little time yet.

I am liking the speed and ease of adjusting the camera and surprisingly, for as intimidated as I was the other night, the learning curve was not that bad.

Speed of acquiring focus seems faster than my D5100 and so far, focusing is right on.

Here are a few shots taken this morning....







I also tested the 1.3 Crop mode... these samples are not cropped in any way...

The left is the standard DX (31mb) and the right is the 1.3 Crop (19mb)



I do not know how much I will use it but if I need a bit more reach on my wildlife shots, it might be worth a try! Also, if I need a longer period of rapid fire for a sporting event I might consider it for that... It is still a RAW image!

Overall, I am very pleased with everything... I have no drawbacks (yet). I am liking the image quality and focus aspects along with the responsiveness...

Howdy!

The first pics, flowers and dogs were all taken with the Nikon 50mm F/1.8

The 2 pics for the comparison were with the 18-105 Nikon through my living room wkindow out the back. (through glass & screen). They were shot at 105mm

Ok, now that I have had a few days to play with it, what do I think???

I am totally pleased... Sunday - Tuesday I worked only with the 7100 and after 3 days, very comfortable with 85% of the controls. I now find it easier and faster than my 5100. I am liking the ease of changing settings and the multitude of things you can control along with the info available.

Shooting speed is fast, clarity of viewfinder is a real blessing. No intention to disparage my 5100, but I had removed the grip. Last night I did a couple tests for focus items and used both cameras. The 5100 seemed like a toy after the 7100. (Note: It is NOT, still an excellent camera... just such a difference when shooting with both together)

Its funny, I have been using the top LCD for info and adjustments and when I picked up the 5100 last night, I found myself looking for that window!!!

I just got a battery grip too. It does add some weight (its the Nikon one) but the grip ability to hold the camera from near any position or angle is really nice. (Thats my opinion only, I like the stable handling feel with a grip)

Anyway... Happy as can be with the D7100, no regrets on getting it at all.. It has great IQ capability but it is still up to the nut behind it to see, compose and capture the image!!!

It's kind of the same way with me Pat. I have been trying to find the time to just keep using the 7000 non stop enough to learn it better. There is nothing wrong with the 3100 it's just that everything is right with the 7000. I'm having fun learning. My biggest problem is having to decide which lenses to keep with what camera

Dave I have the 35mm, 18-105 and 55-300 with my D7000, the D60 has the 18-55 and 55-200, although I am not finding much use for the D60 and its lenses now.

About half of my photos I am using manual focus, so I am finding the viewfinder on the D7100 so much better than my old D3100, it is quite a big difference.
I would still like one of the split focusing screens for it, if they ever bring one out for it.

I dont get to spend enough time shooting mine as I would like, but everyday I use it, I get a bit more familiar with the controls.
Still plenty to learn, and loving every minute of it.

Still waiting for my 16-85. The place I had first ordered it from was just giving me the run around with it being out of stock, I got sick of their BS, so I got a refund. I have now ordered it from someone else, its in the mail and I should have it sometime next week. Hopefully !! Really looking forward to getting this lens, but I have been really enjoying using the 35 1.8G in the meantime, but I would like to have a bit more versatility that the zoom will give me.

I am not having that lens problem!! I had sold my 2 kits lense' for the 5100 so I am down to 4... I typically do not use both at the same time so the 5100 sits without a lens. I have two outdoor projects this weekend and will be using the 5100 for one of them. I like the Grips but the 5100 will likely be used more without.. which is ok because it will be for my walking, woods, dog park camera..

The learning is fun as you stated Dave. I need to get the U1, U2 and My Menu setups done...

As much as I love the D90, which is to my humble opinion a robust stallion, the D7100 is simply another breed...

The picture without the 1.3 crop looks a tad sharper, but still both are excellent results from the kit lens. I have not tried out the 1.3 crop mode so far, but will give it a go on the 55-300 on my next days off.
