First attempts at light painting

Here are a few pictures of me using Xmas lights to light paint. Too cold/windy to go outside, so, tried doing it indoors. Moved the camera instead of the lights as they were firmly affixed to the mantle and tree. Removing them to experiment with would have incurred my wife's wrath. When it gets warmer outside, and I have a tripod, I want to experiment with more outside effects (auto headlights for example)

If you have a zoom, you can do the usual zoom on lights to give a nice effect. In the shot below, I zoomed a 70-200 lens while tapping on the tripod to get the light painting effect.

I like this effect, almost looks like some of my tie dye shirts. What shutter speed did you use? I found that between 20~30 seconds produced that nice "nebula" effect that is apparent in your photo (which I like BTW). I don't have a tripod yet, so, I had to be the thing that moved...haha.
