I shot raw and then processed in LR-saved the photo and when I checked the properties , it said JPG format. I saved it using the original format and shot the photo with a 3300. I would have thought the original would be NEF?
NEF is a RAW format proprietary to Nikon. This being the case, you can't Save a .NEF file as a NEF file. You can Save it to another format (.JPG, .TIF etc.) or you can close the .NEF without changes being applied. This is why RAW editing is referred to as "non-destructive"; it's almost impossible to screw up your original RAW file.

I say "almost" because if I don't someone will point out that if you are really, really determined to edit and re-save in .NEF format there are workarounds and it CAN be done.

When you EXPORTED the image... the export dialogue box lets/demands that you select a format... JPEG was selected... which is what gets exported. Your original RAW NEF file is still on your computer... LR did NOT change the original file.
