Fill my gap?

For my D7100 I'm mainly using a tokina 116 for wide and both a 55-300 and 70-300 for the long end. In the gap between these two extremes I've so far been happy with the performance of my 24f2.8D, but I prefer to mainly leave the 24 on my D610 or F100, so I'm looking for suggestions for either a prime or mid range zoom to fill the gap with the D7100.
*Prefer to keep the price low (under $500)
*Have no need for a fast lens
*Sharpness is a priority
*The closer the focusing distance, the better
*Prefer to stick with Nikon/Nikkor
*Not so important, but prefer a full frame rather than DX, as I say though I'm not overly concerned

I know it's not made by Nikon or FF, but I just purchased the Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 and think that it would fit nicely.
Still waiting for mine to arrive, so I can't help with the details on how well it the lens actually is, but after plenty of research I find it to be an excellent lens.
You can also go with the Nikon AF-S 50mm f/1.8G which is another great one.

The best mid-range dx lens in my estimation is the 16x85 vr. You might pickup a refurbished for close to your budget. You should have a 50mm regardless.

Well I had been strongly considering the 16-85, but now have just solved my dilemma and purchased two primes! A 35 1.8dx and a 50 1.8g new, with Australian Nikon warranty for under $500, so I think that's about the best path to take, considering the price.
