Fancy a wide angle macro

Very very interesting.... Love the concept for this lens and the sample photo's give a good idea what kind of shots it is capable of taking. The price is very reasonable as well. I'll go ahead and assume this lens is manual focus only.

It's an interesting concept at the least but before ordering, I'd first want to know the working distance.

If it's too close I can just as easily use a normal wide.

Pure speculation, but I'd assume this thing must be able to focus within 1-2".

The working distance of a normal 50mm macro is really too short to comfortably shoot bugs so it makes me wonder what a 15mm requires to shoot 1:1.

I used 18mm to shoot bugs and I'm extremely close so this one could have a 1:1 you simply can't put into practice.

Edit: I just looked up the working distance of a 60mm 1:1; 0.22m (lens included). That's not much and that's a 60mm.

I read some more about the lens and she might be very useful for landscape too.

This I find quite interesting:

The lens can also serve as an excellent ultra-wide angle lenses with infinity focus for cameras with full frame sensors. A shift mechanism is added at the rear end of the lens with a maximum adjustment of +/- 6mm, which is extremely useful for landscape/architecture photography for distortion correction.

For that price she could be worth the gamble.

I just read the working distance at 1:1: 0.47 cm.

That implies she's practically unusable at that magnification.

You'll get about the same result when using an extension ring between a wide and cam.

The new Laowa 15mm f/4 1:1 Macro lens is the first lens in the market which posseses a ultra wide angle of view and 1:1 Macro ability. This allows photographers from around the world to start experiencing the rather undeveloped field of ‘Wide Angle Macro Photography’ without using an extension tube. Macro Lenses currently in the market tends to have a mid to long focal length and it limits users to take very close-up shots on the insect or flowers, without showing much of the background details like its habitat or environment.

I think their aim is to not use an extension tube.

It's 500$ for a lens that performs as well as a couple of bucks worth of metal.

It's only a 1:1 on paper since you can't shoot a bee without gluing her to the front element. No distance and no light. Even a flash won't work since there is no room.

I was interested if there was some working distance but it turns out to be not too practical. But that shouldn't stop anyone else.

Pardon the necromancy for bringing back on old thread, but I was curious about this lens.

Seems to me there are two big differences between using this and extension rings, namely (1) the DoF that would allow you to shoot macro and medium-distance sharply, and (2) the shift capability.

Correct me if I'm wrong on this?

Shift is perhaps the only real feature here. Also remember that it doesn't even have an auto-aperture control, so you're shooting EVERYTHING blindly and for that price, it's definitely a commodity piece more than anything actually practical.
