I am fully aware of grey imports and legitimate UK stock differences, this one was different but no worries all sorted now.

Ime sorry but you are spreading fake Nikon stories but giving no indications that would hep your fellow purchasers avoid such things,if it was me i would be giving clear indications as to how i came by it exactly how it became known it was a fake and how i resolved it,this is a community on here and we are all here to help each other.
Thats just my opinion

Hi, I've just ordered a Nikon D5500 with 18 - 140mm lens on eBay.... From Gadgetonlinestore, is this the buyer you used? Can you advise on what to look for or how you resolved the issue? Having stated the item was located in Britain it transpires its shipping from Hong Kong which isn't an encouraging start and leaves me wondering if I'll get stung for a customs charge. Was the camera itself genuine? Thanks.

I would appreciate any advice from anyone on how I can check that the £530 camera and lens I ordered last night is genuine.

All i can tell you is you will need to wait, there had been no substantiated fake Nikon stories, there have been model number changing and there where some copy battery grips a while ago, this is why i feel the OP should give us more details,we have to assume to make faking a camera financially viable it would need to be done in the 1,000s so where are they,ok they could be made North Korea but they would not be for domestic consumption they would be to earn dollars so i ask again where are all the stories.
If its true this guy should help people like you avoid buying one,if its not this thread needs removing because of the upset and fear it would cause for no reason, thats the problem with the internet though one unsubstantiated story can become fact just by being read and repeated.

I'm guessing the camera will be genuine as it would be very hard to replicate given the software inside etc, but what about the lens? Any way to check authenticity? There is a recent negative review on the sellers eBay account regarding a fake Nikon lens but very little detail, unsure if its the same author as here.

Any thing can be reversed engineered and made, but is it worth duplicating a Nikon camera? I do not think so. What OP has faced is a legal import from a Hong Kong wholesaler. They buy in bulk at half the price and then sell them without any warranty. In most cases the camera and lens will be genuine Nikon, but batteries, strap, even lens cap will be locally procured. So will the box and packaging. We have similar retailers who sell through e-commerce only and they have their depots in Hong Kong and UK. The prices are generally half that of official retail price.

Nothing wrong with the product as long as it works (usually comes with 15 days money back guaranty only), but if there is any problem, you are stuck.

That's why I only buy products built and manufactured in my neighborhood.

Of course the wood in my D800 has some mis-matched colors, and I get some splinters from the lens, but at least I know where it was made.

I'm curious as well as to the seller , as I'm looking at a new Nikon lens and really don't fancy getting stung and then having to fight an eBay seller who ups and offs , leaving me £300 out of pocket.

Korea has been known to make some fantastic copies of many items. Not sure about cameras though.

Years ago, I was in South Korea with some co-workers and we were shopping for "stuff", and knock-offs were everywhere. One of the ladies had a purse that they were selling copies of, and she looked it over and felt that the knock-off was actually better than her original. This was the exception, rather than the rule, though.

I'm of the opinion that they can make fake cameras, and believe it would be possible for them to put non-Nikon components into Nikon bodies.
