factory reset on D7100 to fix auto focus problem

Nikon Canada's Service Center gave me an online quote of $189-299 i.e. a ballpark range plus tax. As soon as I went and submitted the camera to them, lo and behold, without even testing the camera, the price went up to $299. Reminded me instantly of Canadian Tire. Two weeks later the camera is now fixed. Said they replaced something in there. They said there is 6 month warranty on the feature that they repaired. I asked them if that warranty would be transferable to anyone I sold this camera to to which they said 'NO'. Funny!
Well, this will be my last Nikon. Never expected a brand name to have a quality such as this and a repair center of theirs to act like a money minting shop rather than being a real customer oriented and caring center. I am going to sell it.
Which Nikon center did you bring your camera to?
I thought they were printing money at the service center too...

At their Toronto location i.e. 1366 Aerowood Drive, Mississauga, ON L4W 1C1, Canada.
Another thing they told me is that warranties on Nikon products are never transferable from one owner to another.

But one way to get around this is to ask for the original receipt when you buy second hand. I've been told by the store that if I have the original receipt they will ship to Nikon and handle the warranty for me even if it's not my name on the receipt. Since the shipping is handled from the store's address, there is no way Nikon can know who is using the camera and who now owns it.

There are two buttons on the camera body with green dots next to them. On the D7100 I'm pretty sure it's the Exposure Compensation button on top and the "Qual" button on the back of the body on the bottom left. Press and hold both buttons simultaneously until the you see the reset occur on the rear LCD.

Yes, the camera needs to be turned on.
Press and hold both buttons simultaneously for five seconds. That should do it. I thought you saw something on the LCD but maybe not. Either way, a five-second press will do it.

Edit: According to the manual, two seconds is all it takes: How to Reset a DSLR to Factory Default Settings

Thanks buddy
and thanks God, the issue resolved!
I detached the lens and see the focus pin on the body seems to be stuck, and also I reset the camera, after turning ON, the focus worked again and I hope it doesn't goes wrong again!
before that I couldn't switch between AF modes by dials! but now its OK!

is there any other way to rest apart from the two Green buttons ? i too have a focus point issue and while i have extensively gone through the manual i cant find the info i need . The two button reset does not put it back to the out of the box factory setting , it only changes certain
menus

From the various menus you can also reset custom settings, reset shooting menu and reset user settings.

What is your focus point problem? We often tell people to do a reset, but I like to encourage them to track down any undesirable settings and learn what went wrong. Its rare that the camera actually has a glitch and truly needs a reset.

The two-button reset is the only automated reset option.

What info is it you're not finding in the manual that you need?

Same problem here, but with D7200. Seems like some things don't change within a generation... Can't change focus mode with the side switch, single-point focus, Locked is constatly displayed (focus lock is not on). Issue is present with any lens, and no resets help. The camera is just days old, I hope I'll have more luck with support.

thanks ..
dude you saved my Nikon D7100...
actually i learned about that "L" focus lock while learning DSLR..
But forget about that function ..
when that accidentally enabled i thought that my D7100 got damaged ..
and i tried all other setting except this "L" lock ...
But You opened my eyes...
Once again Thank you Mr.Great...Oz

Does it take the picture even though it does not focus? Is the camera body set to autofocus? (lever near lens mount).

Thank you for this post. I was troubleshooting an AF issue with my D7100 this weekend, my AF/M lever near the lens mount was between settings! I was not even thinking to look there until I read this - THANKS !!! :)
