Eye-Fi Cards???

From what I understand about the eye-fi cards, it hosts the images in the cloud on the vendors web space? Is that accurate?

Being your in your place, can you find a wired option? I'd think that would be less expensive and more secure as well. Just a thought.

Joe, My "studio" is clear at the opposite end of the house from the computer... I could tether with cable to the tablet but I am always concerned about a "trip hazard". The other aspect is when out in the field, I can also view full size images before I leave the location..

Cloud is optional.. if you want to be able to view later from any device.. I am still gonna send to my main puter and lightroom when done... Cloud not required..

Ok, thanks to all for the comments, tips, suggestions and links.

I bought one as my local Best Buy had one in stock, the 8 Gig X2 Pro which handles Raw files, can direct connect to my tablet etc.

I set it up last night... For MY use, I am pleased... I wanted a Wireless Preview on my Samsung Tablet (Android) when shooting in my little home "studio". Also wanted the ability to take on assignment remote, without wireless and direct connect to my tablet for preview in the field. I just had a recent field shoot that those which looked good on the camera view were not as exciting when I got home..

I installled all (went ok but there were some burps, parts not clear and I am not too smart.).

I tested shots and they worked fine coming into my tablet, using my home network. I then went down to the little studio and tested and pictures showed up fine on the tablet. I did increase screen on time for the tablet.

Today, I took some at work.. tablet was at my desk. As soon as I returned, it synced up and transferred the 9 shots. Then I shot some in the qc lab and they seemed to work fine. There is a lag until it syncs up and then the transfer is pretty quick. Keep in mind, I am shooting RAW...

Then I did a timed test.... shot 4 pictures

Sync Time (until I get the d/l symbol) 25 seconds
1st phot (including synch) 44 seconds
2nd 15 seconds
3rd 15 seconds
4th 14 seconds.

Total time from snapping 1st pic until 4th is displayed was 1:28 including initial Sync ( I think sync is faster on my home network.)

For purposes of my preview this is plenty fast enough... I consider the tests a success and the product adequate for my needs.

I will d/l the cards as I always have to main computer with Lightroom when the shoots are over where they go into directories by date and then edited are stored by month.

Would I buy this as a primary card?? No, but for what I want to accomplish it works great and will hold 300 Raw Photo's.

Again, thanks to all at Nikonites for the comments and thoughts....

Thanks for the review. I have been looking at these as well and will order one this week based on your review.

Thanks for taking the time to post

Do you know which one you are going to order??? If you do not shoot raw and have no desire for "remote" direct connetc (You will be at home with Network) you can save a few bucks by not getting the X2 Pro.

I got the 8 gb Pro as I wanted both of those features for my "preview" use of raw at both home and in the field. For normal dailey use, I will be using my normal card...

Let me know how it works when you get it.

RAW and it will be the X2 Pro for the same reasons you mention above. I will use my regular cards more but I have a few times I wished I could view the pics on my Ipad or Laptop without going through the full export when using the card reader. My eyes are not as good as they used to be so I want to review on a larger screen.

Sounds good, those times I quoted should be good then as I am Raw with the 5100 and they are the same basic sensor..

My tablet was a Samsung full size Android...

Pat - thanks for doing the leg work. This is something that I am now considering but mine will be mostly to preview the results (jpg). This might be difficult using the D800 RAW files unless I switch it to DX mode to get something similar as your D5100.

I think I am going to set up my Eye-fi card for my wife's Nikon L120 to go to her Nexus. the thing I don;t remember is if it clears the card when it uploads. I don't want it to when it uploads to the tablet because I want ot use ViewNX2 to upload it to her computer later and then clear the card. This sounds like what you are doing. Is that correct?

I am assuming that you are referring to your raw files being larger?? Mine were about 16 - 18 mb when I did the time tests.. Once synced up, it only took 15 seconds, if you get into the 20 second range, it may not be too bad. I usually take 2 or 3 and then go look..

Also, save Raw and JPEG... JPEG would be faster???

Don, it does not (at least as I have set) remove the photo after uploading to the tablet etc. I was able to upload mine into the main computer later. You do have to watch filling card as I think it will remove old files if it fills..

Well got the card tonight, X2 Pro 16g and its pretty slick. I did the direct mode from camera to iPad. It was some slow with jpeg+fine, so I switched to jpeg-normal and I think I will stick with that. My wife will love me now I can send the pics I get to the IPad while she is in the stands at games and such. Also I think it will be really handy not having to take the card out for proofing portraits on a bigger screen.

Glad that it worked... I was taking some night shots tonight... would shoot a couple or 3 and load the camera back in suv, get in (it was cold) and then look at the shots on the tablet!

I set the Eye-Fi card up in my wife's Nikon L120 this morning and set it to upload to her computer and to her Nexus tablet. It was easy to set up and what I was worried about was changing it form the tablet to the computer. It is pretty easy to do and only takes a second. I went out with her camera and tablet and shot a photo and it went to the tablet and I then uploaded it directly to FaceBook which is what she does with a lot of her photos.

I am going to get a lot of Brownie Points when she gets home.

Glad that it worked Don! I have mine set to only upload RAW to my tablet. I intend to use it as a preview... I did some night shots last weekend and as they appeared on the Tablet, I could see just how bad they were!! :)

I have used it the same way on other location and studio shots. When finished, I download all directly to the Main Computer as a normal card...

My wife does not do well with technical things. I guess that is why she keeps me around. Automating downloads to her computer is a thing she will like. I noticed last week while we were in Bellingrath Gardens that she would not keep up with me. I would turn around and go back and she would be shooting something with her phone so she could upload it on FaceBook right then. This setup will help with that. Better from her Nikon than her iPhone.

Just grabbed a 4GB one of these for $30 to muck around with in my D7000. Should be a good bit of fun. Will setup slot 1 RAW with 32GB SD, slot 2 jpeg, normal for the Eye Fi and send it to my ipad.

also one of the reasons I wanted it was to be able to transfer to my iPhone while out and about. That does work but then the camera and iPhone would be tied up forever transferring. There was supposed to be a way of only transferring only specific files but I lost patience before I figured that out.

This was my reason and I have tried two different cards to see which was better. The Eye Fi Pro X2 and a Transcend Wifi version. They both do the same job, but differently.

The Eye-Fi Pro card I use in my X20 and it seems much easier to set up than the Transcend card, but doesn't have preview as you shoot like the Transcend card. I use the transcend card in the D5200 and as I said it does offers preview as you shoot, but not fast.

This doesn't worry me as i bought them to shoot out and about and use them to transfer to the iPad or iPhone for sharing or to store in the cloud. If you are looking quick results or fast previews, these cards aren't for you. The technology doesn't seem to be there yet. However, they are a good way of seeing your images on the iPad or iPhone when you don't have the laptop/computer beside you.

Hope that's helpful.
