The 70-300mm lens is not a fast lens to begin with, and to use an extension tube with it will cut down the amount of light even further. I *think* that may be causing your problem. You mentioned an 85mm macro lens...generally macros are faster...around f/2.8...so when the light is cut down, there is still enough there for the camera to operate its AF.

So what brand/make of extension tubes would you guys recommend? I'd be using it with a 105mm 2.8 VR on a D800E that will auto focus up to F8 I believe. I just want to get better then 1:1 ratio.

From my research the Kenko teleconverters are the only ones that work with the greatest variety of Nikon lenses. Even the Nikon ones are extremely limited (I have a Kenko TC). On that basis I see no reason why their extension tubes shouldn't also work, as stated by 480sparky. However, I'm new to this kit and have just bought Polaroid AF extensions!

There's scores of tube brands that will work with Nikon lenses. The F-mount had been around since 1959. Just take a look on fleabay.......

That I do not dispute. And I have edited my post to be slightly more accurate: Kenko seem to make TCs that work with the greatest variety of Nikon lenses. Tubes I cannot comment on, but a company with that track record with TCs must be a safe bet for tubes, too. Which is what you recommended, so I'm not sure we are where we are.
