I realize my photo is a bit flat for lighting. I can't get my flash info to show so not sure if I used my flash but if I did I had it turned down to -3 because it was such heavy foliage on the hike that I was afraid of seeing the flash in the darkness.

Is the log behind his head too distracting? Should I crop tighter?

Both logs are distracting . . . the one directly behind his head looks like it's coming out of his head, and the one hanging over his head. A shallower depth of field would have been more effective.

Is he your son? He is the best part of the photo. Nice pose and expression. I would crop out the top part, apply a little bit of selective blur to the background, and brighten/lighten his eye area, and IMHO, you would have a lovely photo of a beautiful boy.

It's a slow day in the office today so just for fun I removed the uppermost log from the shot using Photoshop and I thought that made a huge impact on the photo overall. I think it's far more distracting than the one directly behind the subject.

Oh wow forgot about posting this. No I haven't delved into any PP stuff yet still working on my camera skills. Thanx I will keep trying and keep background distractions in mind
