Experimenting

Well I have found one issue with the diffuser set up.... The paper wasps do not like it and I could not get anywhere near them, then to top it off one stung the foam near my hand. So I called it quits after that. I will go through and see what I have and see if there is anything usable.

You're getting some good results there Scott.

My led ring light/flash turned up today, I gave it a quick try this afternoon, I didnt get one keeper, obviously a bit of a learning curve to use it properly and get good results.
I will have to read the manual and see if it has anything to help me

Post your photos here so I can see :) also mine never came with instructions lol. I would be keen to see which one you got.

When using the ring light I am in full manual aswell if that helps.

I got the Yongnuo MR-58 Amazon.com: Yongnuo LED Macro Ring Flash MR-58 for Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Panasonic, Olympus: Camera & Photo

I tried a variety of settings, tried with the light on, and as a flash. Using it as a flash, I seemed to get too slow a shutter speed.
Bit annoyed because I found a hornet attacking a spider, every shot ended up blurred.

Heres 2 typical shots.

Whats the settings used? Looks like your ISO is too low and the shutter speed too slow.
Also how far away from them were you?

Just for starters try it with f/11, 1/250sec, auto ISO

Yeah, just did some googling on this flash, others have had problems too.

I had the iso too low, aperture was at f18, camera was on A priority, so I was getting too slow a shutter speed.

From what I found by googling, using it as a flash isn't very successful as its not powerful enough.

I will have more of a play tomorrow if I get a chance.

Try it in Manual ;)

Here is another diffuser set up using plain old A4 laminating pouch. Nice and flexible and smaller than my first diffuser. Seems to work ok.

Here is another diffuser setup. I am hoping it will work well with spiders and give a nice reflection. Also it may allow me to widen the end and make a soft box kind of set up.

The above diffuser worked but was not soft enough, I have gone with my original one but have it velcroed on to the front of the Raynox filter. This provides a nice "soft" light which fades out at the bottom, it also covers the Raynox clips which gets rid of the funny tabs that you can see in spiders eyes. Will post a photo soon.
