Helping Users - why not Exif?

"Post New Thread" here refuses me, says I do not have sufficient permission (perhaps it is just the Site News topic?)

So, I will post a reply here, since the topic of Experience seems to somehow also be about helping beginners with their issues.

My notion is that this forum strips away Exif data on images hosted here. I do not know that for a fact, and I know other factors can strip it, but nevertheless, searching hard finds no exceptions. My guess is that it is true.

If so, it surely must be an admin choice, because stripping Exif is of course extremely counterproductive for a photo forum. I suggest that Exif be reevaluated, and reenabled, and specifically encouraged.

Right, only staff can post in site news.

The EXIF issue has been brought up before. Unfortunately it's a limitation of the software when an image has to be resized, which is currently set to 1024 width. Thumbnails will never retain exif, but the full size image will.

So in other words, only upload images 1024 and under to the forum, in the gallery (which accepts larger files before resizing) or link to them when hosted elsewhere to retain exif. Like I mentioned in the other thread, I put in a ticket to vbulletin for this, but I doubt they will ever make the change.

Thanks John. Yes, that does seem a real shame about Exif being stripped. Beginners asking what was wrong never seem to realize it helps to know what they did. :)

I have changed my mind about the Hobbyist classification. I don't care what the profile says, but did not realize it also posted with every message, as if it were important. I would rather mine be blank. Thanks.

I myself was annoyed when I could no longer post without making a choice. This could in some ways may be helpful if it was made optional. It doesn't take very long looking at a person's pictures or what they write in their posts to determine their level of ability to take pictures or help someone. To me, telling me you are a pro or simi pro doesn't tell me anything. I personally know people that make their living taking pictures that I think need to get another profession and I know others that have never made a dime off of photography that are very good.

The ability to post beautiful pictures or to be helpful to others on this site has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that you make money off of photography or not. I chose simi pro because I have made money off of my pictures and that was where I fit in according to the choices I was given. My definition of a real simi pro or pro has nothing to do with money but stricky on one's ability. Being a pro to me means that whenever you are given different situations that you have the experience and ability to adapt and get a great picture and not how much you charge or even if you do not charge anything at all.

Until I feel that I meet my own definition I am changing my status back to hobbyist. Since 1970 I have made money off and on with my photography but I still feel more comfortable being listed as a hobbyist.

Hopefully some of my pictures are worth a look and that members know that if I can help them out in any way that I will, then I am a happy camper and everything is just fine with me. As they say, just my two cents worth.

Nicely said :)
