Every time I use my D5100, I wonder why I bought....

...my D800. The D5100 really is a good camera. Lightweight, compact, and it takes excellent photos. And, when it comes to the "kit" lenses, they are far more than adequate for 90% of us that take photos as a hobby. The following series was taken today with my D5100, 18-55mm, 55-200, and 35mm.

It really is an awesome camera & i find myself using the 18-55 most of the time thanks to its versatility & quality.

I really love my D5100. The only shortfall I see in it for my use is the Lack of commander mode with the built in flash.

I have three lenses with my camera. The 18-55, the 55-200 and the 40 macro. I would say that I use all three about the same amount of time. They all have their uses. The trick is to remember to shoot for the focal length.

Fortunately mine was to compliment/replace a D70 which i love as a camera but its obvious in my case why i bought the D5100,a lot has changed in 10 years as a new comer to the smaller lighter range i find it a tad small so added a battery grip just to give a bit more to get my hands round.
After saying that i struggle to hit the correct letters when texting with my touch screen phone must be an age thing:D

I just used today so far the D7000. I have to say that I like my d5100 so much that I don't wanna change now.

Ugh.... thanks for helping me quell the gear obsession. Only had the D5100 for ~9 months but already drooling over full frame/DX upgrades.

I heard it put this way... "when your gear starts to become a limiting factor in the quality of your photo's, then you can consider upgrades." I'm far from that point. ;)

I really like the image quality. I had a Sony a77 that I believe is the same sensor as the 5200, 7200. I didn't find the picture quality was as good as the 5100. Like many things a lot has to do with the shooter and their ability

That is true about the shooter but I believe Sony only provides the sensor, Nikon still has to program(?)/connect the circuitry to how they see fit.

Same engine different output?

The sensor inside the D5200 is made by Toshiba, not Sony. It was a first for Nikon to go with a new vendor.

My D5100 has just been to Singapore and Hong Kong with me and took some heavy use in different conditions. I must admit, there were times when I wished that it was waterproof ! But, it did the job well.
I bought it because the IQ is the same as in the d7000, for less money. Of course, the ergonomics and body are different, but better equipment will not improve ones photographs. It's an easy trap to fall into.
