Elliot's as often as I can...

My day job is to protect our native red squirrels by exterminating these, not much I could do at this nature reserve though other than enjoy watching them and take a few pictures.

Went on a short trip to the North Pennines AONB (area of outstanding natural beauty) today but didn't take a single landscape shot. Did find some possible spots to go back to when the light will make for an interesting shot.

Here's a few random shots from the day, starting with some Llamas which were a surprise change from the countless sheep.

I think this had the potential to be an exceptional shot but I was definitely the limiting factor. I love the back lighting and the composition with the steps but in the dim light I was really struggling to manually focus and I don't think this is as sharp and in focus as it could be. I think my wife was losing patience with me too so I gave up before I was 100% happy.

Any critique on this shot is certainly welcome as I know I could have done more to make the most of this situation.

Nice captures Elliot. I like the arched opening best. I see your wife is an old tree hugger, the tree being the old. I like trees too. Sorry I have no input with the stairway shot other than to say you did better than I could have. That is an interesting composition location with a tricky lighting situation. Is that old tree in the beech family?

She's a tree hugger and a bit of a bunny hugger too! It is a copper beech so you're spot on there.

The lighting was tricky and the metering with my 55mm macro is odd. Still haven't figured it out yet. I got sharper shots but the pose or composition weren't as good.

Just looking at my settings again, should probably have increased the ISO for a faster shutter, motion blur might be causing some of the softness.

My job is to ensure these little guys continue to exist in Northumberland. Unfortunately that means a lot of grey squirrel trapping and I don't get much chance to stop and photograph the reds. Today I got to spend a couple of pretty special hours watching these reds at a local country park, sometimes with them within arms reach.

This is the first shot I've processed, will post more tomorrow.

Very nice shot. They are a neat looking squirrel. Much different from the fox squirrel we have here (along with the greys).

You certainly beat us hands down on the number of different species of squirrels. We've got two now but only want the one. I think there are North American red squirrels but even they look a lot different from ours.

I spent my birthday at Edinburgh Zoo. Lots of shots in dim light and through glass and wire but I'm happy with the shots I managed to get. This tiger photo is probably my favourite.
