Was just reading a few posts on here and something hit me which I'm gonna put to a poll (if I can get it to work).

In terms of our beloved hobby here on Nikonites, the results of all our zooms, focusing, lighting, etc etc, what is the end result:

A photograph (or photo)
An image
A picture (or pic)
A snap (or snapshot)

What term(s) do you use most? (I've allowed multiple choices in case you use more than one, but try to restrict your choice to the two you use most) ;)

I tend to use photo, pic, shot, image and capture rather interchangably, with capture usually reserved for when the photo is of a fleeting moment that would otherwise pass unnoticed (which is really everything, but I'm talking about a momentary expression, like a bird in flight, where movement is stalled forever).

I do not equate shot and snapshot as for me the latter seems to denote a random pressing of a shutter button with no thought to composition or the more artistic and mechanical aspects of photography. Not saying that there's anything wrong with shooting that way, but if I were to spend an hour setting up a single photo and someone were to call it a "snapshot" I suspect I would take offense.

Picture and photograph would be the ones i use the most. However, out of all the words, photograph would be the most appropiate term to use. Picture and image have different meanings behind them and do not always refer to an actual "photograph".

Snapshot - when just out shooting for no particular reason. Having fun.

Picture or Photograph - When I put some thought and work into it (Picture if it was facebook nice, photograph if it was frame worthy)

Image - When I Spend hours in PhotoShop working on it to get it just right. :mad:Someone would be in pain if they called one of these a "SnapShot"

I just read the Adobe article Marcel linked in his RAW vs. Jpeg thread and it has caused me to assess my use of these terms. I hadn't read it before coming back to this thread this morning, but I find myself more aligned to what Don shared above. I think it clarifies things, for me at least.

Image, Picture & Capture refer to the digital rendering I can see on my computer.

Photo or Photograph refer to the physical rendering of that image or picture - the print I can hold in my hand.

(snapshot is still just that - the event of pressing the shutter button while doing nothing more than simply aiming the camera)

A snapshot is something made for yourself to record a fleeting moment in time. A photograph is something made that was snapped with perfect timing, lighting, exposure, and composition.

My wife of 37 years is an English teacher so I get if trouble if I use words carelessly
