What is the attraction to DXO Optics?

What does it do better than Photoshop or Lightroom? I have access to the program, but haven't discovered it's benefits over other programs.

Good question, same here. I use ACR 6+ and CS5 Ext, but would always like to see opinions on stuff i know nothing about

Here is a comparison between PhotoShop CS6 and DXO Pro 7. The difference in processing:

The first photo was processed in DXO prior to PS. DXO made the NEF conversion and applied it's magic. That photo was then processed in PS AUTO for Tone, Contrast, and Color.

The second photo was processed completely with PhotoShop. PS made the NEF conversion and applied it's magic. That photo was then processed in PS AUTO for Tone, Contrast, and Color.

So, the only difference between the two photos is that the first was pre-processed with DXO. The DXO file is a little bit larger, so who knows what that is.

The results are subjective to your liking. The jury is still out on the usefulness of DXO.

Agreed - both appear to have the same sharpness, with perhaps a little more Sat. in the DXO, but this could easily be remedied in CS

This is a detail crop of both. The DXO is first, and the PS is second.

I believe that PS is the better program. PS offers more options and the result quality appears the same. The hair on the top of the head is a bit sharper in the first photo, but it's not enough for me to run out and buy a program. I'd suggest that people put the money toward a gear purchase.

Cheers Ted - nice to see the differences

There's a tiny amount of less detail in the CS crop in the very bright areas, but again, this can be brought back a tad in the Shads & Light option. And perhaps a tad more contrast in the DXO, but its minor enough to be sorted in CS
