If it makes you feel better, OP, I did this exact same thing yesterday. While putting my D600 on a tripod in the back of a dark auditorium (to use for video), I accidentally switched it to DX mode. The video still looks fine because I was looking at the display screen to set the shot (though I lost some resolution). I took some photos of the group afterwards, not noticing the black frame in the viewfinder (and with playback mode off for pics), so I didn't notice that I missed the full shots I thought I was getting.
Thanks to the advice of others here, I have now switched the function of the Fn button to spot metering instead of FX/DX. Mistakes are the fastest way to learn.
