Was the dolphin jumping out of the water when you captured this image? It's nice that you were able to be close enough since you didn't have to zoom out all the way.

I think so. I was looking over the top of the camera when I saw it. I hit the back focus and shutter release,then looked through the viewfinder and didn't see it. I got lucky with the shot.

My limited experience with jumping dolphins is that the jump is slow enough to be able to be captured if you are ready to shoot and quick on the shutter. I was lucky enough last year to be on the beach when a pod was fishing offshore and frequently breaching. I switched to my long lens and tried to be ready when I saw them break the surface. I managed to get several in the air, and a whole bunch of just tails as the dolphin re-entered the water.

That is a great photo! I had focus set with a large box and in animal mode. I think that's how it was in focus being that I wasn't looking through the viewfinder.
