I have thought about it but have never got around to it, I think getting external HDD's would be a cheaper option than the time capsules.

Yes, Can't tell you how it works but just got one after Christmas. Hubby has it set up so it has a copy of all my photos and I can either work on my macbook pro or the iMac. I just use iphoto so he made a copy onto the time capsule and I work out of that so its always updated and I can switch computers if I want and still have what I was working on. I also have a new WD HD that I will back up occasionally as needed just to be safe but the time capsule updates automatically. Also our wifi reaches much farther now so I can be way out behind the barn and my iPhone is still on wifi. Our old time machine died last year after 6-7yrs of service and 2 complete computer crashes where it saved everything for us. I can't help with technical info but hubby watched youtube videos and figured out how to use the time machine as an external HD and so far it works great for me.

I actually use Airport Extreme instead of Airport Time Capsule. The real difference is ATC has a hard drive built in while AE does not (you connect an external HD). I prefer this because of modularity, if either of the components in the ATC breaks (wifi or HD) then you're sort of out of luck. It made a little more sense for me to get AE because I already have a ton of externals I can use. You can swap out externals and choose the size that works for you.

Either way, they're terrific little units. Wifi is better at my house and I sync my time capsule with it and it does everything behind the scenes. Like most things Apple, it was a breeze to setup.
