You can have that same control with many other cameras ;) Just saying...

Of course you can but I'm using P&S and DSLR rather stereotypical as two opposite approaches.

I'm not saying anything about P&S because I care little about what cam people use or how exactly they process their shots. If I like them, I like them and it doesn't make any difference to me if they used a 2$ click-clack or a state of the art piece of plastic. Even when I might wonder or ask how they did something, I don't care either how they processed it. It's all good to me if the result is great.

I'm just talking about why I use RAW and why I apply the same logic to the taking and the making of my shots.

And I think processing is fun. It's like painting but less messy.

I also believe a lot of the so-called snobbery is merely just a perception issue. Yeah, there is certainly some unwarranted browbeating out there, but there are also a lot of people who get their dander up over nothing. I think most of us could care less. We don't care what camera you have, what mode it's in, if you have the full Adobe suite or Elements, or any of that. All we care about is the final image. It doesn't matter how you get there.

In regards to my chimp comment, that's how I feel for me and my photography. It doesn't mean that I think everyone who shoots in JPEG is a dolt with no vision.

Frankly, I don't care about what anyone else does with their photography. Yes, I enjoy the work of others. Yes, I will ask questions and form opinions, likes and dislikes. Yes, I even enjoy reading about the process of others. But at the end of the day, it has no bearing on what I do...for me. What others do doesn't factor into my thought process when my eye is to the viewfinder.

If one day I'm standing in front of the Grand Canyon (which is on my Bucket List), it's probably the only time in my life I'll ever get to be there. I'm going to want some photos. On that day, I'm not using JPEG. That doesn't even factor into the equation. In my mind, for me, if I want to produce something memorable, it's gotta be RAW. Otherwise, I'm no different than the guy next to me with his iPhone. In my mind, for me, we're taking the same photograph, and I don't want that. Not for the Grand Canyon.

Am I going to snicker and snort at that guy because he's using an iPhone? Or the other guy with a D5100 shooting JPEG? Or the other guy with Canon? No. Okay, I'd probably snicker and snort at the Canon guy. But the point is, whatever photograph they're making is theirs.

What's more, I think most people probably think this way. That when we share our opinions, it's our own inner voice. It's what we tell ourselves. I seriously doubt that anyone in the history of...ever...has legitimate concerns over how the other guy shoots. That's why these versus threads never end well, because someone inevitably takes an opinion out of context and makes it personal. These versus threads are basically us speaking to ourselves, expressing how we feel.

It's never about saying what you do is wrong, or sucks.

I shoot, after long time JPEG, RAW. It helps to correct my mistakes easier, especially highlights and shadows. I never shoot both. No, I can not say never. My wife is very impatient waiting of something. When our daughter has a school performance that is the moment I shoot RAW an JPEG.

When we come home, I load the photos. Make some adjustment in LR on the JPEG's. She is happy and can post them on their favorite Social Media such Facebook and Line.

If this is done, I go to my RAW Files make some adjustment, and safe them on my External. Those photos are carried to a Camera store which offers printing a Photo book.

When I afterwards compare on the Computer JPEG's from Camera and my pp's one I think a pretty close. Why? I set my Camera to my favorite settings. Why I don't shoot just JPEG's? I make mistakes and some photos are easier corrected using RAW. But I posted on this Board so much photos taken as JPEG's, and I wanna say you something that I see the power of LR clear: It does a great Job pp JPEG's as well.

Just few day's back I shot lots of photos, and I am no much faster making my adjustments in LR. If I use JPEG's or RAW the time is similar. for pp.

RAW files I use LR only for JPEG's I use LR and Nik Collection. Nik does a great amazing Job on JPEG's. So, now you see why the time is same for getting "My" end product.

RAW vs. JPEG i ssimilar when we start DX vs. FX - Everyon ehas a favorite format. If not, we all use the same thing.

I drive a Chevrolet Captiva as same as my neighbor. I use the full option he does not. Both a great cares with different function. At the end both cars take us to our destination and the guest there don't ask which car did you use. Important is that we there where our goal was.
