difference between all these 105mm lenses??

I bought the Tokina about 3 years ago because I was too cheap to spring for the Nikon. I've had several opportunities to get the Nikon since then for a couple of hundred bucks (factoring in the sale of the Tokina) and can't force myself to do it. The Tokina has great build quality and the Nikon is plastic (like my 85 1.8 and 24-85VR). And, I've convinced myself I don't need VR because I only shoot macro with it. IMO, it can hold its own with any 100/105 macro.

Thanks for that background!

Was reading reviews on the Simga lens on B&H photo & several people say it is noisy so if you are doing insect photography etc its not the best choice- so again, I am torn between the Nikon & the Sigma. I want a 1:1 macro lens that is very quiet with AF/S & really really sharp as I will be photographing insects & flowers. :) which one would fit my wants? Sigma or Nikon?

I think any of the new ( and some not so new ) macro lenses are capable of producing superb images, whatever one you buy, you will always wonder if the other one might have been better, thats just human nature.
When I was looking and researching which one to buy, I went back and forth between the Tokina, Sigma and Nikon. In the end I was ready to order the Sigma because it seemed the best value to me, a matter of hours before I was to buy the Sigma, I found a like new Nikon 105G advertised for 1/4 new price, turns out her son messed up the price when he listed it, we ended up settling on an amount that was about 35% of new price, so I went with the Nikon knowing I could onsell it for a profit and get the Sigma.
I am happy enough to keep the Nikon, once I got used to it, I have gotten some great shots with it.

Later when I am on my home computer I will post a link or some photos I have taken with it.

If you look at the optical metric scores for the D7100 at DxO marks, the Sigma 105 scores highest on sharpness of all three. It takes more to be a good lens but I've read nothing bad this far about the Sigma.

I've been tempted buying one myself before I switched to the FX.

Just adding to the confusion here :D
I have the Nikon 105mm & absolutely love it..
Maybe it's old fashioned, but i do still prefer Nikon glass over third parties..
Add to that a lack of support here..

That being said, all 3 are stellar lenses & you can't go wrong with any of them..
actually YOU can go wrong with bad techniques etc, but you'll be happy with any choice ;)

As far as the volume of Nikon's VR compared with Sigma's OS, my Nikon 70-300mm and my previous Sigma 70-200mm both had very quiet VR/OS. My Nikon 105mm and my current Nikon 70-200mm have somewhat noisy VR--and both lenses are new. The 105mm was purchased last fall but rarely used with VR. My current Nikon 70-200mm is used on a tripod due to its weight and my forearm tendonitis.

I'd suggest trying out both the Sigma and the Nikon at a store to see how much difference in volume you hear between the VR/OS.

Is the Sigma 105 macro not an FX lens like the others?

Wow! Those are some awesome images!! Anyone have any shots from a simga 105mm they can show me? I watched YT reviews for both Simga & Nikon 105mms & they look to be the same? I forgot to mention that I have a Nikon D7100 if that helps any.

So on a crop sensor like a D7100, you have to focus the lens manually or am I confused? Lol

Yes, the latest version will autofocus on the D7100. Since it has a focus motor, it will even AF on the D5xxx and D3xxx models. Older lenses that lack a focus motor won't work on the D3xxx and D5xxx models, but older AF lenses and the new AF-S lenses will work on the D7100.
