@480sparky...one of the things I like about you is your improvisational skills. You always seem to find a work around solution. Great skills to have.Back in 'the old days', I had a few SLR film cameras that didn't have a DOF button (entry-level ones).
My solution was to push the lens release button, turn the lens slightly on it's bayonet mount, causing the lever that holds the aperture open to disengage, and this would cause the aperture to close to what I had set it at.
Inconvenient to be sure, but it worked.
All my digital cameras for the last several years have had DOF/exposure/focus review buttons. Press the button and the image pops up for my review.
Sorry for those disappointed in not having a dof preview button.
I got over it after about 0.3 seconds. Didn't need one before and my photography isn't gonna suffer now without it.

I'm going in to my 3rd year with my D800 and I'm still learning how to use it. I hope I'm not going too fast.
Oh heck.....Nikon's stock is gonna drop again....they were hoping you'd spring for a newer camera. In any case, happy shooting. I'm not sure which cameras have them and which ones don't.
