Deja vu, all over again

So I got a little deeper into this today. Normally I'll leave things so my Image Review will immediately show the screen with all the shot EXIF, small preview and histogram. Today, when I experienced the issue, I just had it set to show me the basic preview screen and instead of showing the file information at the bottom I got a gray line. After zooming in and back out the file information appeared. The image review still remained on until I reset it but after that it was fine. No write/card active light was lit.

I'll be contacting Nikon and letting them know, and send them this information. Not sure if it will do anything, but it's another piece of the puzzle.

On my D500 this grey bar appears when you touch and hold the bottom of the screen. You can then slide your finger left and right and scroll through images. The moment you lift your finger the bar disappears. It seems that your screen thinks something is touching its bottom (err.. sorry) all the time. Could it be your screen protector messing up with the screen?

Could it be? Yes, I think it could. I thought I spent my first day shooting without it, but what do I know. At least I know what that bar means. LOL I'll take the protector off and see if that helps. Never thought of it. I suppose I could also turn off the touch screen too. Hmmmm.

Thanks, Marek!!

Just want to first thank the folks here for being an overall civilized bunch of people. You poke when necessary, but only then. I can't say as much for other places (Dad always said, "It's OK to be a d*ck every once in a while, son, because there are times when certain people deserve to hear from one. But nobody wants to be around one 24/7, not even a $5 hooker."), so kudos to y'all.

And second it would seem that the Kenko screen protector I have is the likely culprit to the problems both this time and previously. I'm not yet 100% on this as I am quite certain that I experienced the image review not shutting off with this camera before reapplying the protector, but I'm convinced that the gray line issue noted is from it. I've removed the cover and will be testing it out.

Touch screens work off of conductivity so that could be it. Once you are sure, then notify Nikon so they can warn everyone else.

Who would expect that a screen protector can cause a grey bar??

I'm using this Expert Shield protector and so far it seems fine. But I've had it only for a couple of days. Will report here if I notice any weird behaviour.

And that's the reason I've made my quest to figure this out rather public, so that folks are aware of what can happen. Some folks elsewhere see it as the bitching and moaning of someone who can't be bothered to read the manual. Like I said before. ;)

I am going to write this into a review for the shield on B&H's site.

Thom hogan has made a mention (2 July) here about the screen protecter and the screen.

So, Does the problem seam solved without the protector?

That's because Thom and I have had an extended email conversation about this in June. ;)

Is it "solved"? No. But I believe the cause is identified. After removing the screen protector I still experienced the lack of a time out. Without letting it time out I then took a lens cloth and wiped the screen clean and it timed out properly. My take is that the touch screen is extremely sensitive and, perhaps, reacts to other surface conductors - like skin oil from a nose or hand touching it (or perhaps in this case leftover adhesive from an old screen protector). This is all stuff I can live with. My main purpose in posting about this was understanding the potential cause for the issue, not to in any way complain about what was happening.

@BackdoorHippie, I contacted Sigma as you suggested about my preview staying on with my one lens. I know it is the D7200, but I thought you might find the response interesting.

"Thank you for contacting Sigma Corporation of America.

This behavior is related to the specifications of some of our OS lens when it is used with D7200. It is one of the features of some of our lens with OS function that it stays in communication with the camera body after D7200's auto-off operation. Please note this will not cause any malfunction to the camera body, and you can keep using our products without any worry. As long as we have investigated, such lens operation is only identified with D7200. Therefore, it is assumed that the functionality of D7200 might be different from conventional cameras. It will be very much appreciated if you could also understand it is one of the features of some of our lens with OS function, and it is a sign of normal operation of the lens. Thanks for your kind attention and understanding.

Although this is normal behavior your lens may still need a firmware update if you are having issues with focusing in live view or issues with the OS. Please send the lens to our office in Ronkonkoma, NY for a free firmware update."

I am going to send the lens in for a firmware upgrade. It appears that the lens OS system communication is part of why my preview stays on only with the Sigma 18-250.

This is a similar response to what they issued with regard to the Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 OS and the D500. Thom Hogan document this response and reasons why in the linked article (and in the article linked in the linked article).

Sigma just issued a D500 specific firmware update for the 150-600mm when used with the 1.4x TC, which I have. Thankfully I can do that with the dock.

I've got this exact problem, so you're not alone. Only happens now and then so not a big deal. Hopefully it will be fixed with a firmware update If enough people bother to mention it.

I seem to have not posted an update to this thread, but the problem is limited to the touch screen sensitivity alone. Screen protectors may or may not exacerbate the issue, but the culprit is skin oil on the screen acting as a conductor. With smartphones using this tech for ages it's amazing that Nikon has managed to implement one that goes right up against one of the oiliest parts of the body (the nose) and managed not to compensate for this.

Anyway, I've simply turned off the touch screen and haven't had a problem since.
