I'll try to explain how I see it. When the moon is close to either moon rise or moon set, the sun rays that light up the moon go through the earth's atmosphere before it its the moon. This is what, in my opinion, creates that orange glow. It's the same phenomena that happens at sunset or sunrise.

Ding, ding, ding, ding....we have a winner! :D

I get how the refraction of the light will change the color (5 semesters of physics ... for a computer science degree!!), what I couldn't understand was that it had most of the horizon yellow as well. City lights make sense, though I somehow would have expected them to the left knowing where San Diego is in reference to where Dave does a lot of shooting (yes, it could obviously be another town).

Maybe just water vapor from the ocean backlit by the moonset?

That light is coming from La Jolla. I'm shoot from this point HERE (hopefully this link brings you to Coast Park. I tried to get the GPS coordinates but can't seem to figure out how to get Googlemaps to spit that info out)

Here's a shot just a minute or two later and zoomed in at 70mm (I had my 24-70mm lens on). At this magnification it cuts out the bleed over from La Jolla

Sun backs down
Blood red sky
Seven crowns
I hear your whisper
Higher ground

Angel arms around me
Carry me all night
And my soul in season
Hands are raised

Cause something’s gonna change
