Seems to be a recurring theme with about 90% of what comes out of this kit 55-200 lens. REALLY don't like it much at all, but can't swing the funds for a while to really upgrade to good glass. Extremely frustrating to say the very least.

I was just thinking that you are getting the hang of the 55-200. When you know you have a tight DOF snap a couple extra and either move the focus minutely or force the AF to do-it-again. If in doubt back off the zoom and rely on the 24.2 million pixels to give you a little cropability.

Good stuff.

Thanks Mike. I really appreciate that. Think the hardest part is trying to figure out what I really need to get when I upgrade so that I'm not throwing money at something not much different than what I have.

Thats the agony ime going through with my sigma,i know i could improve on it but by how much within my budget, the tamron sounds great but have seen mixed results and with it being longer and heavier will i be knocking it back to 400 for hand held shots

Thanks! Some shots really do work better than others. Seems there really needs to be solid contrast for the clarity to kick in.

I have done just that with backing off the full focal length some as of late. It does seem to help get a better focus and DOF. To me, the lens seems to stop just barely shy of sharp focus when the subject is out at full focal range. Even when in manual, I'd like to turn it just a fraction farther to get it sharp.

Having the right program and knowledge to be able to layer and properly edit will hopefully help some too in the future.

You have proof in your images that you have good glass.

All you need to do is understand why the lens you have will not do what you want a lens to do. If you do not understand the why, then wait until you do and you will know exactly what the next lens needs to do.

Had been tossing about the idea of adding a 70-300, but I keep thinking I'd be much happier with a reach out to 400. I just don't know which lens to really consider for that purpose. I know it's not going to be a 400 2.8, but which other should it be for my DX??

If you want it for wildlife the first thing to say is no lens will be long enough :D,the cheapest lens i know of with good results is the sigma 150-500

Guessing the wasp was cropped. If it was not he DOF would be very shallow, maybe 1/4", so your focus could be dead on, but just not enough DOF to swallow the front half of the subject with room for error.

Was cropped just a little. Think you're right about the DOF being too small to encompass the whole yellow jacket.

This one might be slightly better. Tried for a while to catch him in flight, but was always focused just a bit long. I'll get that sucker one of these days. :)

To me the color shots are more impressive. From the b/w that one with the beard guy on the horse is awesome

Thank you Michael. I couple of these were so washed out in color due to the super harsh direct sunlight, I had to convert to b/w to save a bit of the shot. I did take the horseman with the US flag back to color ...
