D850 vs D5 Autofocusing

Nice real world example,as he says though unless you where coming from a D5 its still a great camera,wonder how it stacks against a D500.

I wonder about the D500 vs D850 in focusing, too. One thing I will say, is that I don't think 3D focusing was the best choice for the test.

I have never got on with any tracking mode,in the past i found it would go off target more than i do and if ime in control i can get it back on quicker.

Give the "group" mode a try on your D500. It's the only other mode that I use besides single point for BIF when tracking.

Agreed. Group works really well in situations where there won't be objects between you and the subject.

MY... GAWD... It's almost as if there are reasons why the D5 costs $3,200 more than the D850!!

I use single and 25 but no tracking, hell if i cant keep a bird in the 25 group i better give up.

Just found this,i wonder if he had it set up right.

The D850 also comes with the same AF lock-on adjustment menu as the D5, helping to focus more accurately on subjects moving toward the camera

The D850 is rubbish for AF because Nikon didn't send me one free of charge. If they would, I might change my opinion.

I really respect Matt Granger and enjoy his channel, however, I think using 3D Focus Tracking may not be the best way to test the AF with regard to formulating an AF capability opinion. Here is a review by Jared Polin (froknowsphoto.com) which I think is very well done and an excellent representation of the AF performance of the D850:

Welcome to the forum, i agree with him, on my D500 i never use tracking for BIF i use single point and can bring in 25 point dynamic any time with the press of my afc/on button.
