D850 Live View?

I am a hobbyist and still finding my way around my D850. I want to use Live View for certain things but there seem to be differences between what my screen is showing and the manual and I am hoping someone can point me in the right direction to setting it up correctly.

Firstly, the focus point/s are simply not showing. All I am getting is a red/green point right up in the left hand corner. I am on AF-F and Normal AF Focus mode.
Secondly, there is no exposure indicator. By that I mean I can change aperture and shutter speed but no indicator as to when the exposure is correct. I understand there is supposed to be a preview button which the manual says is the "OK" button but this does nothing to the live view screen.

As a result I am quite literally shooting in the dark in live view with no way of checking either the focus or exposure levels. Obviously I have something wrong in the settings but so far have not been able to find out what.

Any suggestions? Thanks

Reading the liveview section in my D750 manual, I'm hoping it is similar.

You move the focus point around the screen with the D-pad, and pressing OK will center it. If you are in face-detect mode, it will try to find a face and move to that.

I kind of suspect from your description that you have not checked if AF is turned on, and you are in manual focus mode. Remember there is a switch on camera and likely another on the lens, both must be on.

thanks for the reply. I think the 750 and 850 must be a bit different. I have found out how to focus using touch screen now so all seems to be good. Still trying to sort out other ways to do it. I am set to AF on both camera and lens.

Did you purchase the camera new or is it possible there are some custom setting in the camera? The a8 setting controls if the shutter release button, the AF-On button or other controls are used to focus.

Thanks. I do have it set to AF-on at the moment as I like back button focus. It was used but I have set it up as I want it. I suppose my question now is, " is live view focussing only by touch screen?"
