D800e left focus issue

A friend of mine dropped his lens and because he wanted it back with no dents whatsoever he waited close to three months to get it back because parts had to come from Japan all the while he kept checking his repair status to no avail. His also was conflicting. One day it would say one thing and the next another and then one day it was delivered even though the website said it was still in the shop. I have heard others complain about this. Nikon's service department needs to get together when it comes to updating their customers repair status.

I suspect that this must be a trend of the times, Once Nikon service and support of photographers was epic, but,,,, not anymore it seems, I stick with a local shop.

It's funny how one person's experience can be so different from another.

I live in Huntington Station on Long Island which is about 15 minutes down the road from Nikon, Melville. I've always been treated well and gotten great service. I'm not even an NPS member but when I needed a camera for a shoot and they couldn't get mine back to me in time, they gave me a loaner.

Jim, the head tech over there is a really nice guy and he's always been up front with me about Nikon issues and technical details. I forget the name of the assistant manager I've dealt with in the past but she was so nice and really went out of her way to take care of me.

I don't know why Nikon would act as if they haven't seen the left side AF issue or don't know about it. They have a standard procedure for that fix whereby they connect the camera to their computer and rather than performing a standard AF check and calibration they calibrate each AF point individually and my understanding is that once that procedure is gone, all is well and the left side AF point issue is gone.

My friend and I had great service from Nikon . Repairs were excellent its the repair status feature on their website that needs to evaluated.

So the doorbell rings and its the ups guy. I am thinking its my wives lol. Turns out its my camera! I looked at the well packaged return, and the invoice. The work order invoice looks very promising, see for yourself.

Looks good. B1 service means they didn't do the individual AF point calibration but you never know. The items listed, except for adjustment of the mirror angle, are all standard procedure for basic service.

From what I see, its fixed. I live view focus on the right and left, and then AF viewfinder on right and left. No issues.! I will do a thorough tonight. This is great!

Awesome!!!! Most of the time they do get things right. I hope they nailed it.

Me too! Look what I picked up last night :)

congrats,, now you have a copy of the best 35 mm DSLR in the world,,,

Thanks! I did some landscape photos last night with the other D800E OMG the detail is just great! The detail in the roads, it almost seems 3D like. Best camera ever. I was doing an interview last night and they were filming it on a 5D mark III, and were blown away by my D800E.

I gave the videographer the D800E to hold and he said exact words "It just feels better to hold, like it was designed for perfection"! Thats exactly what I have been saying LOL D800 rules!

Ok, took the camera back on Tuesday and I asked to speak to a supervisor, I was calm and nice about it, he listen to everything I had to say, even how Dutch Nikon fixes them. He took my letter explaining the process and asked the counter person to make sure to bring the camera back to "him"
Well, just picked it up and...
The camera is insanely sharp! It's fixed! Every point and the lens is at 0 adjustment! I'm so happy.
Yeaaa.

Great news. I will at some point purchase a D-800 but will wait quite a while till the bugs are worked out. Right after I purchased my D-700 the price dropped. I will wait till the D-800 comes down.Enjoy

what does your work order say?

That's the weird thing, mine went in as a B1, then B2 the second time.
the b1 said they clean it, check for good working order and adjust focus.
The B2 said re-repair adjust focus.
When I question about the B1 vs B2 to the supervisor there, he said it didn't matter and that that was the way the person at the counter entered.
maybe when you bring things to them directly things work a little different and they don't follow all the rules? The first time it went in, the left focus was ok but they killed the center. The second time is sharp all around with 0 fine adjustments. Also, when I called the 800 number they tell me that the camera was not even in the shop, I walk in the next day and it was fixed ready to be picked up. Their Internet status is nowhere up to date.

Also, when you call the 800 number they want all types of proof and pictures emailed... When you go to the window at Melville, they just take it and take your word for it.

I just did a real full test. 50mm 1.4g lens test @ f/1.4. I did live view @ center, left, right. Then 3 shots @ center, left, right with AF. All AF shots are sharp. There is NO fluctuation between points. In fact, it seems the AF is sharper than the live view!

I did the same test with the "other" d800e, the one that i used until they fixed mine. It was blurry 2 out of 3 times, and the left side was bad. The live view was bad as well. So it confirms that Melville actually can fix these D800's and they actually know the issue exists.

Problems are being solved. I would buy another one now knowing I just have to drop it off for a week and its good to go!
