D800 or D7100?

This statement is not accurate at all unless you are talking about consumer lenses. There are prime lenses that received lower scores based on what lensrental have posted before and it also depends on the manufacturer. But then again, if an owner of a D800 prefers using his AIS lenses, surely there is nothing wrong with that.

I totally agree with you on this but I would like add something to it that I am sure you agree with me about Glenn...

Let's face it folks modern day lens technology is incredible. Primes are great and the zooms are great. MUCH better than the old lenses. All of the old non Ai and Ais lenses for example...my 28 is soft on dslr so is the 50. Even the 105 is but this is a good thing in that case. I would wager that not many of those old lenses will translate to the dslr world successfully. They will be lackluster at least compared to when used on a film camera.

I don't understand why a D800 user couldn't use a modern wide angle zoom and a tripod say to make just as good a landscape picture as they could with a prime. Primes are not THAT superior to zooms come on...now they used to be but not anymore...

very true, you bring a good point.
i think i intend on staying with DX and you're right 36 mp is alot. i do not plan on printing anything that big.

If you intend on staying with DX then you have pretty much answered your own question. The 7100 looks an amazing DX body, but you will get higher FPS from the d300s. I would buy the d300s second hand if I were you and FPS/buffer mattered to me.

The d7100 will probably handle noise better and give you a better ability to crop due to the higher MP. The autofocus on both are meant to be great, but the 7100 gives you more points.

I really don't understand the limited buffer on the d7100. Seems a ridiculous decision with memory so cheap these days.

Nikon intentionally handicapped the 7100 just like it did the 600...

Or maybe they found out the hard way with the 600 that for high frame per second rate they need better tolerance for their mirror and shutter box (read between lines dust-oil).

Or they have realized that the mirror motion is a nonsense when it comes to fps, plus, they have mirrorless for sale...

They gave the D300S big time fps so it wouldn't have been that big a deal just like they could have easily put more than 39 AF points on the D600 but then it would really be D800 lite...as I read somewhere just yesterday they learned an important lesson about their bottom line with the D700.

Maybe not a big deal, but if you look at the price, the D300s is quite a bit more expensive than the D7000… I'm sure building a "pro" body involves more expensive parts somewhere since they have to be more reliable and last longer.
