D800 Focus problem

I friend in my local camera club handed me his D800 tonight and asked if I knew what was wrong with it.
  1. BBF was set up correctly
  2. All modes were set correctly as far and I could tell
  3. Had a 35mm FX lens on the camera.
  4. Lens was set to auto focus
  5. Switch on camera was on Auto
  6. focus on something far away the the lens focus would go all the way to the closest focus point and stop.
  7. You could manual focus back to correct and try again and it would focus all the way to closest and stop.
  8. Put it in live view and the camera/lens would focus just fine.
What am I missing?

Does live view use the same mirror or sensor to focus from? Perhaps the mirror is dirty?

Isn't it phase detection vs contrast detection when using viewfinder vs live-view? It could be the phase detection too, it has a phase detection sensor at the back which could have an issue.

Dust, dirt, moisture and/or etc. on or near the focusing screen/sensors would be the first guess and easiest to remedy. This is taken out of play when in live view and the mirror is raised.

If the same thing occurs with all lenses, it sounds like something with the body. The first thing I would do is wipe down the mount on the body and the lens.
