So how well are things made in Thailand? In general, are there usually quality control issues?

I should imagine Nikon would have some type of quality control...I'm sure they don't want another D600 type problem...

Many Car makers such as Denso, Honda, BMW, Mercedes, Toyota, GM, etc.. have got facilities in Thailand. Thais are working as same good or bad as every other ppl And believe me. And let me tell you something, when Thais work in foreign, the leaders, engineers, and ppl who are responsible for quality, spend 3-12 month in the mother company to get trained about quality, assembling, etc.

Every piece of Nikon equipment I own was made in Japan. And it is all still 100% operational. I will not get something that was made in China or Thailand.

Japan made products are known for their high quality products so the expectation is there. Other products from China are perceived to have lower standard and quality. It takes time before people warms up with Thailand.

South Korea for example have come a long way with their manufacturing. Samsung tvs and monitors for example is one of the top leader in that area.

Doesn't mean anything.

I know some of you guys are old enough to remember that everything made in Japan was junk at one time. My 70-200 f4 is made in Thailand and it's one of Nikon's best. How do you like the SB700?, made in Thailand. The 18-35g is made in China, it's superb.

I have had bodies from both the Japan Plant and Thailand, and well,, the one that failed, was not the Japan one,, another sad day when the pro line closes.. but I bet lots of the workers are nearing the retirement age in Japan,, so the old school knowledge is going. bring on the no pride workers!

Just because things are being made in a different country doesn't mean the workers don't have pride in what they do and what they make is junk...

Given my druthers I want my camera equipment made in a country where the workers have personal freedom and incentive to do a good job. just saying--- and I put my money where my mouth is.

Looks like our beloved company is playing their dirty little tricks on us again: sRAW (what a gimmick), no WiFi, and of course: higher price. Game of "one hands gives, the other one takes away"...

It may sound another gimmick but the posted images comapring the D4s, D4, D3s D800E, and D600 from one of the guest poster revealed a substantial cleaner images when shooting in a low light high ISO scene when using SRAW.

Most people do not realize the possible reason why Nikon is shifting some of its production elsewhere is the added or increased in sales tax in Japan from 4% to 8%. Just about everything have increase in cost including toll fees, train fares, and drinks from vending machines. It is safe to assume that production cost including smaller parts from other distributors in Japan will affect the overall cost. From a business stand point, Thailand may be the better solution to keep the cost down.

@aqtuazon: thanks for that link!

OK - RAW-s obviously has one advantage - a smaller size (due to it's smaller pixel count+4:1 binning). But, if you carefully compare results at ISO 4009.600, you'll notice the loss of details in RAW-s (look at the nose&mouth of that gray "android" in the middle).

All in all, the D800s/810 is a good camera, I don't deny that:cool:...
