Believe me I tried all combinations, I also have D700, all my lenses work well on that body, so lenses are not the cause. But on the manual (page 132) there is a paragraph like that

"AF LensesDo not use AF lenses with the lens focus mode switch set to M and the camera focus-mode selector set to AF. Failure to observe this precaution could damage the camera or lens. This does not apply to AF-S lenses, which can be used in M mode without setting the camera focus-mode selector to M."

I am not sure what this warning talking about.

That's a warning to not use AF-lenses on manual while the cam is set to AF. I have such a lens. When on AF, you can not manually correct focus and have to switch them to M mode to do that. I guess it would apply to a situation where your cam is focusing the lens when you simultaneously try manually adjusting it. In that you would put unnecessary force on the system and could damage it.

New AF-S lenses can be manually adjusted without it affecting the focus motor in any way.

Check your settings again since the symbol on your info screen clearly is the auto-focus/exposure lock. The fact that it is brighter probably indicates it is active.

That's not the D750 menu btw, I just grabbed a shot online.

It's possible his back-button is stuck and in that, when set to lock, acts identical as it is supposed to do when we press it manually.

He can go to the settings and change the function of that button and set it to none. If that solves it, the button is the problem.

It's possible it is standard set to "press to lock" but I'm not going to reset my cam to check that.

I just got the same problem with my D750.
I tried everything here and stills no auto focus at all.
How did you solve your problem??
Anyone knows how it turned out?

The #1 Reason I lose AF on my D75 is the AF-rocker switch on the back of the body; make sure it's in the white-dot position like you see in the pic. Moving the switch to the "L" position, as shown in the red circle, locks the auto-focus. I didn't see this possibility addressed in this thread so I thought I'd mention it.
