D750 set to manual focus mode & using remote ML-L3 won't fire because the camera does not show ⦁

the scenario:
D750 with AF-S Micro Nikkor 105mm lens, ML-L3 remote release
The camera and the lens are both set to manual focus mode.
The camera is set to use the the quick response remote option.
A1 and A2 are set to shutter priority (shouldn't matter with manual focus)
The point of focus falls outside of the 51 focus points (but to replicate you can just have everything out of focus)
The viewfinder shows either a right or left triangle or both, but not a circle.
The ML-L3 WILL NOT release the shutter under these conditions.

Am I missing something? How do I get around this?

Yes, they are set to release.
I should add that pressing the shutter button does work. Also I am using a tripod.
I have tested it with all MASP modes and focus modes AF-S, AF-C and AF-A. Also if a circle is shown in the viewfinder then the remote does work.

There is a line in the shooting menu for Release on Focus or similar wording. Turn it off, this is active for Auto and Manual focus. Your D750 is working exactly as it should in that mode. The dot indicates the AF sensor thinks you are focused, the triangles are arrows telling you to turn the focus ring left or right to obtain focus.

Doesn't seem to cover the D750 though.

Maybe you can focus in manual then switch to AF-C according to this chart it doesn't try to focus. Maybe a corded release would serve the purpose better?

"Release" is the correct setting, but I think that is what you mean. It's what I was trying to remember in my earlier answer while on lunch break at work.

Then there is this in the footnotes for using the ML-L3 remote...
Page 195 of the D750 user manual:
A Focusing in Remote Control Mode
The camera will not adjust focus continuously when continuous-servo
autofocus is selected; note however that regardless of the autofocus
mode selected, you can focus by pressing the camera shutter-release
button halfway before shooting. If auto- or single-servo autofocus is
selected or the camera is in live view in delayed or quick-response
remote mode, the camera will automatically adjust focus before
shooting; if the camera is unable to focus in viewfinder photography, it
will return to stand-by without releasing the shutter.
