D7200 or D610?

I feel for your indecision.

Faced almost the same choice a year and a bit back. In the camera store a D7100 and D610 on the counter in front of me. (Today it would be the D7200 vs a slightly price reduced D610). I had the D5100 so very similar boat to the one you are in.

It was tough. I'm sure you've discovered there is a plethora of opinion on this - and enough YouTubes on it to let you cancel cable for a month and still not have time to watch them all.

The straw that tipped the scale in favour of the D610 in my case was my dear wife behind me quietly saying "Don't settle for less than you really want" - that took the dollar difference out of the debate (which for me at that moment was a serious consideration). I've since come to realize that my lens investments currently (and planned future investments) will make the price difference look marginal.

I have not regretted the decision to go FX. (My pocket book feels differently).

Having said that, I will probably add a D7200 to my collection in the future (maybe the D7300 or D7400 by the time I get to it). Until then my D5100 also is useful (eg take it to events like the Calgary Stampede where there is risk to the camera - and where carrying a lighter camera is a bonus).

Both cameras will be a huge upgrade and you will enjoy either.

And of course so much depends on what you want to shoot. Shooting long - then a crop has an optical advantage (there is a debate about how much of an advantage but won't get into that). Suffice to say that many birders prefer the 7000x series. If you are a "Sir Cropalot' like me and end up using just a portion of your picture then the D610 shines. It all depends.

And IF saving dollars (pounds) matters - then the D7200 wins - less initial investment *usually, and for sure you can use less expensive glass - often much less expensive. Not all FX glass is priced at the painful levels - but much is. And with either one you can go vintage if you like and save a lot on the glass.

My humble opinion on this hotly debated discussion.
