D7100 Video - Sorely missed settings

Hi guys,

Just wanted to give you my feedback on my latest camera acquisition. Since I have moved my focus towards filming lately, I have finally switched to a Panasonic GH4 (with a 12-35 F2.8 OS lens), leaving my D7100 and all its glass behind. I didn't go for the A7s, too expensive for me (lenses!) and not so much more portable than the D7100...

Guess I'm not a Nikonite anymore... :/

Switching to the new mirrorless camera and its Micro 4/3rd sensor, I can clearly state that it has its upsides and downsides.
- The GH4 buries the D7100 in terms of weight, size and user interface (foldable touchscreen, tons of smart options, wifi, peaking, zebras, highlights/shadows... a proper videocamera!), and it is of course much better for video (in well-lit areas). The 4K and all the video options make it a real treat. In terms of photography, I noticed the faster and more reliable Autofocus, as well as the ultrafast burst mode (12fps with autofocus, 40fps without autofocus). And thanks to its silent mode and electronic shutter, it can be completely silent, no shutter noise whatsoever.
- The D7100 will be sorely missed for certain aspects though: its finish is generally better, more solid and sturdy; it has a 2nd SDcard slot, which is cool, and I'll miss my lenses... And then there's the photo quality in general: the D7100 buries the GH4 in terms of quality! It is much better than the GH4 at low light, less noise, and of course twice the bokeh (it's really low on micro 4/3rds...) Pictures of the D7100 just look so much better: glass or body? Probably both...

So there you have it: I leave the Nikon community but it will remain close to my heart and I will never question its choice for photography!

Thought I would just add some thoughts to the subject of using the nikon D7100 for video. Like many of you, I got hooked on photography and got recommended a Nikon for many reasons. I started of with the D5100, a great beginner camera. After couple of years I started getting interested in video, and am currently studying film production in the UK. During the two years of doing photography I have collected a lot of lenses Nikon and when it was time to upgrade I found it difficult to change brand, since I like the cameras so much. I decided to go for the D7100. some of the reasons are:
- Sharper image
- 1.3X for extra zoom in video.
- 720p 60fps
. Manual control over the ISO and shutter speed in live view
- Audio bars
- much better low light performance
It certainly has some cons as well like lack of iris control in live view, no zebra, focus peaking to name some.
My point is that if you would like to get into video and still use Nikon, I would get a D7100 or above. And it is certainly possible to use it for that. And remember that what ever camera you change to later, you can always use your nikon glass with adapters. Here is an example of a video I shot in lowlight with the D7100 w/tamron 24-70/2.8

If you want a great video experience, don't use a DSLR; use a dedicated video camera. If you want great still pictures use a DSLR not a video camera. The Nikon DSLR's just aren't well designed for video, in my opinion.

My Canon video camera can run circles around my D7100 for video. Just the opposite for stills.

Why not get a full blown video camera if that's what your into ? I just dumped an Olympus MFT system and bought back into Nikon for the much better IQ and bigger sensors.
