Even if that was the case low light should cause the focus to hunt not freeze, bright sun this morning for its first freeze.

I know but mine rarely freezes during this period of the year while during the winter it's way worse. I can't explain it.

I'm glad I didn't pull the trigger yet. I'm also looking at the Sigma 150-600 contemporary for the same price. B&H has them , but for Canon only. Nikon coming soon.

Had a chat with someone on another forum who had the focus problem occasionally, they tracked it down to the way they where holding the lens, with the lens having full time MF they found if they moved the focus ring a fraction at the same time as pressing the shutter button it stopped the AF,this isn't my problem as i have the tripod mount resting in my hand so have no contact with the focus ring.

I doubt the Sigma will be without her own issues. I fear they all want to make lens that has to perform too much for too little money. If it works out, great for us but there's probably a reason why those other lenses cost a fortune.

I try to not let it get to me. It helps also that I can shoot the 300mm.

I was just testing something. If I focus on something close and then suddenly move to another part that is distant and very out of focus, the lens will not refocus and just keep the previous focus. It only adjusts the moment I release the shutter and press again.

Maybe the freeze is somehow related to that.

Had an experience with focus not happening a few days ago. The problem was in the timer for picture review. Why I adjusted it to a long duration? I have no clue or memory even of doing that. Anyway, as I back button focus, the back button does not cancel the after shot preview in the lcd screen. With the lcd preview activated, af will not happen. The shutter button does the cancellation of preview, just a half squeeze works. Man I was going nuts wondering why the dang thing wouldn't budge. Happened with the 150-600 and a macro lens. So. if you use back button focus and after shot preview, this may be causing a no focus situation.

That's strange, my back button focus always cancel image review and got on with focusing. I don't have the 150-600 in question here but I wonder if it has to do with Menu A3 about delay on focus tracking. Just a thought? I keep mine off always. But default is 3.

I appreciate the suggestions as to what the problem could be keep them coming, every one though i have considered after reading and they dont fit with my situation, the review image on mine only shows a quick glimpse as its writing to the card, its of no use to me without my reading glasses so dont bother with it.
This is the image i was trying to capture when the freeze occurred, the bird is on a embankment which slopes steadily away,it was fairly close but not too close, after the refusal to focus on the bird i pointed the camera about 15/20ft beyond the bird still nothing, switched off and on and it worked,as you can see the lighting should have caused no problems and it didnt after the freeze.
I wish i could find out it was something i was doing then i could solve it,there is the possibility i may change it for another with a later serial number so i get the VC update just in case there is something else hidden in the update.

This is my focus point,it was placed there with me being close and the bird being at a slight angle and i wanted to spread the DOF over the complete bird.

I cant see it should have had any problem in this situation

It's been about a month since I had a freeze. Just did it once yesterday after taking this shot.

Good light and I was about ten feet away from the skipper. Usually it freezes when it can't find focus, but I don't remember that being the problem.

I dont think there is any logic to it or we would have had a resolution to the problem by now,if it only happens about once a month i guess thats not bad,you probably take as many pictures as me.right now ime at the end of the line with it,just waiting for my dealer to get back from his holidays.

I've spoken to a few people at Wako about the firmware update, but no one wants to give up their lens. Also, no one seems to have an issue with the freeze. So far I haven't missed any "to die for" shots due to a freeze.

Hopefully, they'll let you trade for a new one since you seem to have a :lemo:
.
