I was invited to take some shots at a schools' relay event inside the school hall. The lighting wasn't too good and the walls were a lovely shade of orange. I decided to use the best lens in my very small collection, a prime 50mm 1.8. The problem wasn't with exposure but focusing. I chose to take the majority of shots with the children running towards me. Switching from landscape to portrait meant that I didn't have time to change the focus point from the centre (center) to anywhere else. Is it better to use a 3D focus setting?

I struggle with dynamic mode. I have had some success with it, usually when my daughter was off alone on the field or birds in the sky. Other times, dynamic mode works out. I have difficulty with the best application for both of these modes. With scenes like this, you may be stuck picking the initial focus point anyway. I would even give auto area a try. People tend to stay away from auto area, but I think in most cases it would pick the closest kid to focus on and that could work out for kids running at you.
Pay attention to menu a3. Usually best to keep it off. It introduces a delay to continuous focus. It can cause problems when trying to track. Keep it in mind though if you find focus is distracted by other kids in the scene.

My sports photography is getting better. I now have 2 prime lenses - a 50mm and a 105mm Can someone recommend a fast prime lens for sports photography for situations where I can't move further away from the subject with my 50mm. The 50mm is fantastic.
