Does anyone have any experience with after market batteries and Battery grips?
My son had bought aftermerket batteries but they would not work in his D5000???
yet they work in the battery grip.
I would like a grip but do not want to spend big money on it.

thanks,
Chris

I bought an extra Nikon battery for mine and make sure that it is always charged with a wall charger. The D7000 has a looooong battery life. I leave my camera on most of the time and shoot in RAW. The only thing that brings the battery down faster is video but I still have never had one drain on me. Grips are too cumbersome for me. I don't like the extra bulk. JMO.

If you're looking to save money then aftermarket is probably your best option. I would search the net for the D7000 and their respective battery grips. Read the reviews to see if any one particular brand had more than their "fair share" of issues or success rates.

I think aftermarket products can work well, but sometimes you have to be careful when researching.

Bad luck here with 2 aftermarket camera batteries. It was some time ago, perhaps quality has changed, but I stick to camera brand manufacturer batteries.

While I'm still in the first week of using it, my D7000 has a long battery life. I don't care for grips and have a second Nikon battery as backup, recharging at ~25%.

Guess I'm the odd man out. I have 2 aftermarket batteries for my D7000 & V1. They both work as well as the Nikon batteries. The camera reads them fine.

I don't use a battery grip. No desire to make my camera larger & heavier. If I was to buy one I'd buy the Nikon one. Just me.

Although the third party batteries for the D7000 are temptingly inexpensive, I believe they are not quite the same as an OEM Nikon. I think the Nikon battery has some type of chip in it to communicate with the camera. I may be wrong. Uh oh, just as I posted this, I saw the previous message. I'd buy the Nikon one anyway, at least during the warranty period.

I own a Meike battery grip for my D7000. It works fine. You sacrifice the magnesium alloy materials that the Nikon one has, but if you can get past that then it's a good option (at least in my experience). As for batteries, I own one third-party battery and it won't communicate with the camera when it's in the third party battery grip. However, it works just fine when in the D7000 batterly slot. My Nikon battery does work in the battery grip though.

I wanted a grip for the odd occasion where I am shooting portrait orientation and wanted a vertical shutter button. It is so much more comfortable than the hand twist needed without one. I also bought a Meike grip. Works perfect. Admitted built quality is nowhere near the Nikon version, but it does the job and for the small amount of time I use it, it's fine. Now if I was to have the grip on permanently, I definitely drop the dough for the Nikon. Batteries, only Nikon's here. Now that the price had dropped to around the $50 mark, I see no reason not to buy Nikon.

I'm not sure which third-party batteries everyone has tried, but I've given the Wasabi batteries a shot recently. They work just as well as my stock Nikon one and I picked up a two pack + extra charger with car charger for just under the price of a Nikon battery. The batteries and charger are interchangable with the stock Nikon ones so I always have a power source on hand.

You can also just pick up a single Wasabi battery.

Wasabi Japanese Premium Cell batteries have been recommended on several forums and in reviews as being the equivalent of Nikon and other camera brand batteries. My initial hesitation would be recommending them (or any aftermarket brand) for a camera still under warranty. My poor experience with aftermarket batteries was a long time ago and I'm sure quality has since improved, but once burned......
