D610 Shutter problem

Hi everyone
I’m new to Digital SLRs and have recently bought a low use (<10k) D610.
It does take a picture using AIS lenses and AF-S lenses. However, whatever I seem to try and irrespective of light conditions, when the shutter button is pressed, the shutter closes for about three seconds and then opens. It’s like I am on old-school shutter speed setting of 3 seconds.
I tried the ‘2 button factory reset’ yesterday and the problem remains.
Is there something simple in settings that I am missing or is this a shutter problem and will need repairing professionally?
Thanks

Hi
I’d read on the internet to use Auto. I then tried M as well, to no avail.
Following your message, I’ve just tried U1 and U2 (whatever they mean?) and the shutter is now releasing as it should (ie no delay at all!). Is it that simple? Why wouldn’t it work correctly on Auto?

Hi
I’ve checked the menu settings as you suggest. Self timer is not on. The shutter is fast only when the setting is U1 or U2, which I don’t understand.

To check on what Woody suggested, you need to be in whatever mode is causing the issue. If Aperture Priority is the problem, check the shutter delay while in Aperture Priority. If Auto is the problem, check the shutter delay while in Auto. If you check it while in U1 or U2, it won't be set there because those modes aren't affected. Did you check it while in the affecting mode?

Thanks.
I have set the exposure wheel to ‘Auto’ and then saw that d10 ‘exposure delay mode’ was set to 3 seconds. I’ve set this to OFF and tried to shoot on Auto and it worked!
Have I solved the issue? Did the previous owner have the d10 setting to 3 seconds and this is why the shutter closed for 3 seconds when the shot was taken?

My guess is that's how the camera body was set when you received it. If it's working fine now, then you should be good to go.

Yes and yes :)

If you aren't adverse to good, old-fashioned books, I'd see if you can find a used copy of the d610 by David Busch at a reasonable price. Often these older field guides are way over priced, but maybe you can find one for less if you search.

Alternatively, you can get a pdf of the manual here:
