D600 less than two weeks old - dust problems

Well just returned it.

Placed the order for the other one and it will be here tomorrow.

I've had three, and all three had issues. But only at smaller apertures where I shoot a lot, the shutter was replaced this time under warranty so I am hopeful that the issue never occurs again.

Well got the camera at work and opened it up over my lunch break. I got a display model.

I know this because the box wasn't sealed, the battery wasn't in a plastic bag, and the screen protector didn't have the plastic shipping protection on it. Also the battery was at 1% (been much more charge on any Nikon I've purchased in the past), 19 shutter actuation's (9 of which are registered on the battery), and the camera didn't ask for date/time on first startup.

I messaged them to be like WTF!? and am waiting a response. Think I am being too picky?

19 actuations could just be tests after production, I think a display model would have many more. None of my Nikon gear has ever come in a sealed box. Mine came with the hard plastic screen already on it (no film). Main thing is does it have the dust issue?

Won't know until tonight when I can really test it.

My D600 from local store was a very similar serial #, had plastic covering on the screen protector, battery was in a plastic bag, and camera asked me for date/time on first start up. All the above was missing on this camera.

Also the screen protector has big scuff on it already and the bottom of the camera had a scuff that rubbed off.

I am currently looking for a way to fully factory reset the camera and will run it through its paces tonight and tomorrow. Depending on the results of that and what their response in will decide my action from there. I have nothing against display models normally. I just expect to know in advance and/or receive a bit of a discount.

Serial number on this one is 5002xxx

Mine is serial 5005xxx and I got it oct 2012. So far, I wet cleaned it three times and I have 2 tiny specks that I can only see at f22 (1000 shots after last wet clean). But maybe serial #s are different in the USA than Canada?

I got mine in October, the first day they were available for sale in the US. One wet clean at 4,000 shots, going to do another test soon.

Maybe there is no rhyme or reason to their serial numbers.

Or this is an old batch. Then so was my one local as it was 500xxxx (i can check the receipt at home for the fourth digit)

I just tested mine, at 4515 shots (515 after wet clean) it is still clean. At f16, nothing visible, at f22 a couple dust spots I would consider normal.

Tested mine against the wall with a flash at work @ F16 (on my break). Nothing, perfectly clean. I need to find a lens that can stop down to F22...

If further testing shows this one free of dust issues I may overlook the fact it was a display model lol

If it's dust free, count your blessings! Might want to shoot of a bunch at high continuous to see if oil spots develop.

They have pulled through for me again! They offered a 5% discount or a full refund. :D

So yeah will test further tonight (high continuous like you suggest) and if it problem free I shall keep it with a 5% discount on top of the good deal I already got.

Did little over 200 actuation's tonight. 150 of which were high speed continuous (not all at once mind you).

Was some dust at the end of my testing. Then blew it out with my air bulb a few times. A couple stubborn spots. See for your self. What do you guys think?

I ran out of day light for sky shots. The wall shots don't show the dust as much.

Also checked my receipt for the other one. 5017xxx

Not nearly as bad as mine was, but then again it might get that way after more use. It's extremely frustrating to have a great photo that you are forced to spend an hour correcting because of this. If you don't shoot at high f stops often it's probably not going to be a big deal.
