D600 First Impressions

Thanks Joe. This was a huge step for me and I'm sure I'll be with this for a very long time.

Rick I think the D600 is a ground breaking camera in a very important way like no other camera with such extensive support has ever been able to do before. The 600 is an "affordable" FX camera. I'm sure in the near future we are going to be seeing more of these types of sensors probably priced even cheaper. Why is "affordable" FX at 2K ground breaking? Because the D600 is one of the first digital cameras that is likely stop the cycle of obsolescense that we have seen in the DSLR world since the beginning. It is finally slowing down with this camera. You don't need any sensor any better than this one because it is about as good as one can be. DX is still going to be big and it is still going to be innovative I bet but I think "affordable" FX is going to now be possible for many folks who are serious about their cameras. They are not going to have to upgrade ever again either.

I think the same thing could be said of the D700 perhaps it was the first...but it was 3 grand upon release.

Now the FX lenses are going to rise in price I bet!

Good review and excellent choice, i didn't remember you were using a D5100, that is a big step forward.

You are using only the kit lens?

Here's another shot with the 50mm1.8G. I cropped so much, there was only 1.3 MP left,

I just bought a D600,but i did not care for the 24-85,I just don't think it is good enough for the camera,i sold it off and got a 85 1.8G and 35 2.0D much happier with the primes for now, nice review also.

Now that I have the 50mm, I can see myself doing the same thing. I needed something to start me off with the D600 and the kit lens fit the bill with decent quality for a general purpose lens. I may sell the 24-85 and get the new 28mm and the 16-35. The 50 really shows me just how good this sensor is, I may become a prime fanatic :).

I know what you mean.

After getting the D600 showed my true appreciation to the 50mm lens. It's such a great lens for a cheap price.

You'll definitely like 28mm 1.8. It's such a fast prime for its focal length.

After having the D600 for about six weeks it continues to amaze me with the IQ. I am slightly disappointed in the auto-focus points, most are in the center 1/3 of the frame, they seem tighter than on my D5100.

Lens update- I now only have primes (see my signature), I have gone full circle in that respect.

Another plug for buying local-

I went to my dealer with the 24-85 to see what he would give me towards the 85 1.8g (to complete my set), he gave me a full refund.

Maybe we should rename you, "Optimus Prime" ;) Congrats on the trade in of the 24-85 for the 85mm. You have a great local dealer.

Buying local does allow for greater flexibility in trades. Plus, they get accessories like the battery grip and wireless transfer adapter much sooner than the mass distributors such as Bestbuy or even Amazon. My problem is that in Wichita, all of the local shops have been run out of business by the mass distributors. My nearest local camera shop is 2.5 hours away, but the flexibility and quicker access to accessories makes it worth the drive. I've made the trip twice--Once for my grip and most recently for my wireless adapter.

,

I think I'm gonna have to wait for tax returns for the 16-35, I've over spent my allowance this year:).

You are going to love it ,I went ahead and bought one myself,I would download a photo, but I don't have a clue how to attach one here, but I do have a photo with the 600-16-35 in my images.
