D5100 - In Camera Noise Reduction Settings

This is the last of the NR settings, this is Long Exposure NR. It kicks in if exposure if over 1 sec as we dicovered the other day.

These were shot at 3 sec, f/10 ISO 100 at 38 mm with an 18-105.

The first shot is NR turned OFF and the 2nd is NR is ON

At this level, I saw no noticeable difference in noise... Maaybe some high level scientific study will show more. I am going to leave mine ON for now and see what happens when I shoot some longer exposure...

I thought some of that stuff was only for jpeg output? I've basically ignored most of those settings in camera for that reason and just worry about clean up in lightroom which can do a pretty amazing job if you don't mind a little softness.

Good point, I think one of the 2 specifically mentioned RAW... but maybe I am wrong. Might just try both again with JPEG output and see if that makes a noticable difference...
