D500 walkabout lens

I have had very disappointing results with the 18-200 on my D500. I don't think this lens is capable of matching the resolution of the camera sensor. My 70-300 does produce very sharp images so maybe I should be looking at another FX lens.

Can I get some suggestions on a suitable replacement? Any thoughts on this lens? Nikkor AF-S 24-120mm f4G ED VR

I love that lens. Great on my 7100 and on my 750. If its a little too tight at 24 mm, you could always get a 20mm Nikkor 2.8 for around 300 bucks and stick it in your pocket in case u need it.

I have a grand total of three minutes with this lens in the camera store, so I have no personal help for you. The Angry Photographer on You Tube hates it, but IME that means absolutely nothing. :) Meanwhile, Thom Hogan wrote a review that is mostly favorable to the lens. Tamron 17-50 2.8 or Nikon 17-55 2.8 would be great walkabout lenses with the D500. Both of these are extremely sharp. The Tamron has VC and Nikon doesn't. Both might be what you're looking for.

I used the 24-120 for a while on my D7100 before I got my D750. But I agree with Blacktop, it is not quite wide enough on the DX cameras. My wife used the 18-200 on what is not her D7100 and it does lose a little in the IQ department in my opinion. Have you tried the 18-140 DX lens? I always liked it on the D7100. Also the range (18-140) makes for a nice walk around lens

If the Angry Photographer hates it that's all I need to know - it's the one to get. LOL

Seriously, I've heard great things about the 16-80mm "kit" lens, and the most common complaint is the price. I doubt I'd ever get one, but with Nikon offering a $500 rebate on the kit now you may see some getting dumped for a good price to try and recoup some of the cost of the D500, much as happened with the D750 and the 24-120mm. If they dip as much I may eventually pick one up if only to be able to leave my FX body home on trips to FL.

I still think that the kit 18-55 is the sharpest of all the consumer zooms for DX use. I normally use it if the light is good, else I fall back on the 35mm F1.8DX. That has similar FOV as the 50mm on my earlier film cameras, so I am perfectly comfortable with it. I have also used 16-85, but that is bulky compared to the 18-55, and nothing beats the 35mm in size and discreteness for street shooting.

APs issue was the build quality and phony silent wave motor. I'm pretty sure he's a 17-55 f/2.8, 35-70 f/2.8, and 24-85 vrg fan as well. His reaction is based upon the price versus what a good used 17-55 f/2.8, 35-70 f/2.8, and 24-85 vrg would cost.

I'm having the same issues. I have the older VR version, not the VR II, and the pics are OK, but noticeably softer than what I generally got on my D90. I'm sill trying the auto fine tune route because I really love this lens, but I'm also kinda looking at potential replacements...

My 24-120 f4 came in yesterday. It has great IQ. Focuses OK. Not fast but OK.
It seems a bit dark. I have to change a few settings to get brighter images. Higher ISO or fiddling with f-stops.
Indoors It needs a flash. Overall It's a good choice for a walkaround lens.

I'll probably be going back and forth between the aforementioned 24-120 f4 and the Nikon 85mm f1.8 prime.
I used the 85 as my main do-everything lens for a year. Old habits are hard to break.

Someone's bound to say both of those lenses aren't wide enough at the low end.
The Sigma 17-50 f2.8 VC came in yesterday. It's a fine lens. If I need to go wide I'll change to it.
I can't tell you if it's up to a D500. It's certainly up to a D7100.

best buck for your dx is the tokina 11-16 lens. your alresdy have the 70-300, what is left is getting a cheap 50mm. then is shooting all the way.
