i unboxed the D500 and tried a few more test shots using different cards, 1st up was the XQD card on its own, same story, it started to jump as my pic was being written, i did notice Flicker appearing on the viewfinder??? then the whirrling sound and no focus, it was the same on all 3 cards, even the one i used on my D7000. So back in the box and i will mail it back tomorrow, meantime my new one is in route from San Fran and eta is 3pm tomorrow (Tuesday).

These problems can be very random and they are happening in other systems. The newest and fastest sandisk 300mbs randomly locks up my new Oly Em1 MK 2. Flash memory issues are becoming more widespread as the new tech outpaces gear, hope your new unit fares better! I went back to a slower card and have had no issues.

Was it sold by Amazon or by another retail outlet selling through Amazon?
No access to a local camera store you can use?
