D3100. Potrait suggestions

Our cameras can be set to release the shutter either when the button is pushed or when the camera has achieved focus (pressing the button half way down) in combination with the button being released.

If the camera is set to just release then it will take a picture no matter what the focus is.

doesnt the d3100 automaticaly go to focus priority when in af-s and release when in af-c? it is different to higher end nikon dslrs in that the focus/release function is not independent.

I don't know the answer to that for a D3100, but who knows what settings might have accidentally, or on purpose, changed.
