Resetting the D3100
The D3100 does not have a 2 button reset option. To perform a reset you need to manually choose the reset option in the Shooting Menu and the Setup menu. To do this press 'Menu', select the Shooting Menu and scroll through the options until 'Reset Shooting Options' is highlighted, press ok, highlight 'Yes' and press ok again. Repeat this for the Setup menu.

Thanks for the info Don. I thought this two buttons reset thing was pretty standard on all models.

Hi Jack, certainly I know you are (and others, Marcel & Don, etc) are trying to help and I am very grateful for that.

A local pro-shop told me to send it back. It looks like I have to send my camera back to Nikon (sigh, just in time for Christmas) as I purchased from Wolf Camera this spring and they are no longer in business. I appreciate all of you trying to help. Just really bummed that I've got to be without a camera for a while. (should never have sold my old Nikon, oh well).

So, after all this experience - should have I went with another model? Or is D3100 a good camera and this was just a fluke?

The Nikon D3100 as well as other Nikon models do have a lot of SD card problems for reasons we do not know; however, the reason your camera is not reading the card is that it's not "locked" in the SD card slot. Normally the "in/out" auto reversable locking mechanism that locks the card/releases the card when pushed in to remove, is damaged or worn out. In order to fix you need to send to Nikon for warranty repair if bought within a year ago. If not it will cost some $100.00-150.00 to fix or you can fix it yourself.

Well, time may not be the issue, quality certainly is and Nikon has less of it than some other makers. Have 3 Nikons, 4 Sony and thankfully 7 Canons and mostly canon lenses with my own designed/made adapters; the latter two has, are and I'm sure will work for a long time. I repair my and some of my friends cameras and computers/build; comments from my last 20 or so, years of photography, movie making, repairs, system integration and software design.
