Cropping on D800

ok,, here are my results:

D800 FX mode,, in high speed burst -> 13-14 shots before buffer gets loaded down..

D800 DX mode,, in high speed burst -> 23 shots before the buffer gets loaded down

so,, while not quite 2X,, still way more shots.. 23 shots is a decent depth.

Now,, I need to do some research,, I wish Nikon allowed a DX mode EVEN when use a FX lens, it would be a great way to get raw/Jpeg increased buffer depth..

but so far,, I have to use a DX lens for the increase burst depth to work. Putting on a FX lens, forces it back to FX mode, large file mode,, and decreases the burst depth.

There's a setting in the menu for image size that lets you select DX mode (don't recall the exact menu path right now as I'm still getting familiar with the camera). When I did, just the other day, with my 50 mm 1.4G, I saw in the viewfinder the smaller DX crop frame showing what the FOV is at that setting.

I tried that,, oh,, yes,, that works! very cool,, so by essentially setting the camera to DX mode, you can get burst buffer depth up..

which, well is great in bright light,,, 16 Meg is great,, when you are not sure which is the exact shot that will work, and you want to build up large streams of shots..

D800 -> yeah! best of both worlds, Super detailed files when needed, deep buffer depths when needed.. (ok,, doing the D800 happy dance).

In the Shooting menu, under Image Area, you need to set the Auto DX mode to OFF and then select DX 1.5 under Choose Image Area. I believe you may have the Auto Detect On.
