Controlling 2 Flashes Wirelessly

Hello,

I own a Nikon D7100 and D5100 camera with an SB-700 and Yongnuo 568EX speedlight. I currently use my D7100 as a master to trigger my off camera flashes wirelessly using the pop-up flash. This generally works well but I find sometimes the flashes don't trigger. I think it's because the flashes cannot sense a signal all 360 degrees around? With my D5100, it has no master mode but I can trigger the flashes with the pop-up flash, although I am more restricted as I cannot control flash power on camera.

I'm looking for a good, reasonably priced flash trigger (the ability to act as a wireless shutter release with half-way pressing would be great). I've heard of pocket wizards but I think these are over priced and I want to stick with Yongnuo brand if I can as they sound well priced and reliable. I'm aware of the Yongnuo RF-603 and Yongnuo YN-622N but I don't know much about them. I was hoping someone experienced here could help me select what I require. It would be a bonus if it came with two receivers but this isn't important. Support for high-speed sync would be useful but not essential but it must work in TTL as well as manual.

I use the Yongnuo RF603 and have been very please with them. Much nicer not needing direct line of sight, I can fire flashes in the other room lol.

The 622's are nice, because you have "full" control of the remote flashes. They also do high speed sync and TTL, so that's a bonus. They're a bit pricier, but not by too much. Around 80 for a set. I have the 603's and while a few people on here hate them, they do exactly what I want for the price, around 30. I use them all the time as a remote shutter, and they work flawlessly. They can also act as basic radio triggers, simply telling the flashes to fire, and you have to set the flashes manually. The only downfall so far for me, and a few others, is that they don't have a locking ring, so if you use them on the camera hot shoe, with another flash attached, they don't lock down. This isn't a big deal for me, because I never use a flash on camera, and if I do, It's out and about with no off camera flashes, so this doesn't effect me. Hope this helps.

No idea. I don't have them yet. My brother-in-law bought them for me, but he hasn't sent them to me yet. I guess one way to find out is to ask the manufacturer on their web site. ....or, Google them and see what you come up with.

Yongnuo has released the 603 II which has a locking ring. So I can't use wireless TTL with this trigger? This is a big negative. Can the 622 act as a remote shutter release? It doesn't appear that it can. Also, I heard the 622 underpowers TTL, is this something you've experienced?

Fotojack, it appears the triggers you listed don't support TTL but I'll continue doing research, thanks.

By "full" control, do you mean I can have (for example) 3 SB-800s off camera and change manual power output remotely? Are you saying that the 622 is the RF equivalent of the Nikon SU-800? If so, it is an awesome gizmo.

Yes. I only put "full" control in quotes cause it's ridiculously confusing to control them from the on camera 622. However, they're solving this by the 622 tx. It's a full LCD control. The 622tx is the equivalent of the SU-800. You can put a 622N on the camera, and use that to control the other flahes, but there is no screen, so the controls are pretty confusing. That's why I'm waiting for the 622TX. With the 603's you can NOT use TTL. But, for 30$, it's a good option for manual flash. Also, you can use these with studio flash, and none have TTL. Well, except the B1, but if you have 2 grand to drop on a flash, your not buying the 603's. haha.

603- Tells flash to fire, TTL does not function. Can be used as a wireless radio trigger (works awesome). No locking ring, however the 603 II has one. No power control of other flashes. About 30$/pair. (USD)

622- Has TTL function. Can be used to control power output of other flashes (really confusing). 622tx (soon to come) acts as simple controller to switch between M and TTL, and adjust power output/flash compensation. Does HSS. Don't believe it can be a remote trigger. But you can throw 603 and let it hang, and still use it for remote trigger with 622 on hot shoe. About 80-90$/pair. (USD)

I use a Vello Freewave Plus flash trigger system. Works great, and has the added bonus of also working as an RF shutter release remote. They trigger with no line of sight issues for up to 300 ft. My only beef is that the "On" buttons are easily depressed when sitting in your bag, so keep the batteries out when not in use (which is a good idea anyway).

Thanks very much for your reply, very helpful. The 603 is not suitable for me since it doesn't support TTL andthe same goes for the Vello Freewave Plus. The 622 are appealing to me, and affordable. The YN-622 TX I have heard of, however, I cannot find it for sale within the UK, has it not released yet? If I want to control 2 speedlights (SB700 and YN-568EX), would I need 2x 622 and 1x 622-TX? or would I need to buy 3 622's? How does one control the 622 without the TX?

You'd need a 622n on each flash as the (receiver). On the camera itself, you will have a 622tx (transmitter) to send out the information to the 622n's. And No, it has NOT been released yet. It was supposed to be in october, but that company is pretty slow, and usually everything is delayed. haha. In the meantime, you could use a 622n to control them, but that's pretty confusing. I'm waiting to get the 622tx. Hopefully it's out soon.

Thanks very much. I think it's best to wait for the 622tx to be released before I buy the 2 622's :)

I'll let ya guys know how they are. I love the 622's TTL capability, and it's nice not to have to type in secret codes to try to adjust power. That's what the TX is for. lol
